Over the past two decades thepharmaceutical industry has moved very far from its original purposeof discovering and producing useful new drugs. Now primarily amarketing machine to sell drugs of dubious benefit, this industry usesits wealth and power to co-opt every institution that might stand inits way, including the U.S. Congress, the FDA, academic medicalcenters and the medical profession itself.”The author is not a flamboyant reformer but rather Dr. Marcia Angell, currently Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Medicine atHarvard Medical School. She stepped down as Editor-in-Chief of the NewEngland Journal of Medicine on June 30, 2000.
