Guest guest
They form a perfect match in love, marriage ... kidneys (August 10, 2007) — In a hospital waiting room, Jo Anne and Dave Kleehammer of Brockport try to recall that day they met."Some people remember what they wore on their first date," she says. "I don't."They do agree that the first sighting took place some 35 years ago, during a youth group meeting at church. They just can't figure out exactly when. She reckons it was before their junior year in high school. He insists it was in the summer before senior year."I know for a fact," he says, looking at his wife sitting across from him. "I remember things." The couple is at Strong Memorial Hospital, talking to me after a long afternoon of medical tests in anticipation of a kidney transplant they could not have imagined needing all those years ago. Doctors are scheduled next Tuesday to remove one of Jo Anne's healthy organs for transplant into her husband's body. The development is surprising in so many ways, starting with the disease itself.Dave had no health complaints, he explains as patients and lab technicians pass us in the waiting room, when he went for an annual physical in 1999. But a routine blood test revealed something wrong. More tests led to the discovery that Dave had just one kidney. He was suffering from a kidney disease called focal segmental glomerular sclerosis, which causes scarring of the kidney. Already, he was in renal failure. Dave asked his doctors how long he had. "Ten years. Maybe."Read more of this story >> http://safeyourkidney.com Got a little couch potato?
