Guest guest
Hi Marlena, Well you had quite an experience going grain free! From what you describe you probably did react to the gluten when you ate some oatmeal and bread. Most often it is said that oats OK when one is eating gluten free but for some people it isn't. We never stopped eating grains and we replaced our daily bread by daily buckwheat (with a bit of corn or potato flour) pancakes. My husband started to get better only a couple of days we stopped eating bread and pasta. He also quickly started to loose weight although he wasn't overweight before. He didn't have any spectacular symptoms and has slowly gotten better over time. It is already more than 2,5 yrs that we have been eating gluten free now. Probably it is best that you go slowly in your changes. I had to give up dairy although I loved it a lottttttttt. Eating too much cheese always caused a particular kind of pain in my shoulder and lower back that I haven't had since. Moreover it made me be awake for a couple of hours during the night. Since I stopped eating dairy I don't have sore muscles anymore after exercising - which I had ever since I was a child. For the emotional side of life - as all of us carry with us painful memories - have a look here. It has helped me tremendously: http://www.emofree.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCAnk-NtLbE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVnf3Eb_y4w & mode=related & search= ....and you'll find other videos there too. Actually Yannic, it did help to stop the grains. I stopped eating grains as part of an anti-inflammatory diet my sister recommended to me at our new years party. In the first three days, I dropped a pant size and lost 6 pounds... I'm assuming from bloating and inflammation. From then on, I lost some weight very slowly...about a pound a week. I have to say though that I went through what seems to me to be a horrible detox. I lost a total of 12 pounds of fat in addition to the initial 6 I assumed was from swelling and bloating. I developed boils and a skin rash on my legs, itchy bumps that my doctor called contact dermititis on my hands, and oozy patches of clear fluid on my legs, depression, and body aches. Then when all seemed to calm down, and I was at a healthy weight and was feeling great, I started listening to my friend who is a wellness coach who told me we NEED grains to have a healthy balanced diet. I've become very bloated again after eating just 1/2 cup of oatmeal and a toasted slice of commercial sprouted grain bread. I felt irritable and itchy all over. I drank about half a gallon of water with vit. C trying to flush it out and stop the allergic reaction. Iwas bloated for about three days afterwards. My next attempt to add any grains back, I'll make sure they are gluten-free and see if that makes a difference. With your husband, did he find that when he quit eating grains that he first got worse before he got better? Or did he get better right away? I find that every time I lose weight, I have a lot of symptoms...perhaps from whatever is stored in my fat. My doctor seems to think my fibromyalgia symptoms are stress related. I'm learning to change my thinking. It's a challenge, but a worthwhile one...but I think there is more to fibromyalgia than just emotional negativity. Anything I can do to improve my quality of life is worth doing so I can care for my kids and keep up with life's many demands. Thanks for the links. I'll start making a list of ok grains. One more question... did your husband quit eating dairy? I seem to feel ok after eating organic hormone and antibiotic-free cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt, and kefir. I'm not sure I'm ready to give them up yet, but am interested if others have found benefits from giving them up. I was born loving vegetables...it's a good thing. <smiles>. Thanks again Yannic. I'm interested in learning more about the gluten free diet that helped your husband with firbromyalgia. I've been avoiding all grains, but would like to experiment with adding some to my diet that are gluten-free. Marlena <<Starting to eat gluten free did wonders for my husband.
