Inositol is part of the vitamin B-complex. It is required for proper

formation of cell membranes.

Inositol affects nerve transmission and helps in transporting fats

within the body.

Anxiety, Depression, Obsessive-compulsive disorder and other

conditions have been addressed with use of inositol.

Nuts, beans, wheat and wheat bran, cantaloupe, and oranges are

excellent sources of inositol.

It's classified as a member of the B-complex although not normally

considered a vitamin in and of itself..(the body can make it's own,

for the most part)

I've read that it helps with a few forms of depression, but I haven't

seen anything about helping with sleep...

I'm surprised that they didn't recommend something more mainstream

like melatonin or tryptophan...

here is some info from Dr. Sahelian's website, this is basically

agrees with a number of other sites that I looked at.

Inositol in the Diet

Inositol is present in our foods from both plant and animal sources,

providing the adult human on a mixed North American diet with

approximately 1 g per day. The major dietary forms of myo-inositol

are inositol hexaphosphate or phytic acid, which is widely found in

cereals and legumes and associated with dietary fiber, and myo-

inositol -containing phospholipids from animal and plant sources.

Inositol Benefit

Inositol supplements may benefit those with depression, obsessive-

compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and bipolar conditions. The

inositol dosages used were several grams. Whether smaller amounts of

inositol benefit is not clear. Sometimes researchers choose dosages

of medicines and supplements much higher than is required since they

wish to elicit a quick response. Inositol may benefit women with

polycystic ovary syndrome.

Inositol Unhelpful

Inositol has not been found helpful in PMS, Alzheimer's disease,

autism, or schizophrenia.

Inositol Mechanism of Action

Myo- inositol is metabolized to phosphatidylinositol, which makes up

a small, but very significant, component of cell membranes.

Inositol Dosage

Always start with a lower dosage such as 500 mg. Do not take several

grams at a time unless you have first tried a lower amount to see how

your body reacts to it.

Does anyone know how to find out if Inositol will cause an increase in

estrogen? I have tried all kinds of Google searches and can't find out

a thing about it.
