How would you properly make tinctures from powders?

I recently made some from powders. I just put the powder in the jar and covered it with vodka and shake it up everyday. The powders tend to stick to the bottom of the jar so I really have to turn it upside down and shake it well. It's been about a month and it looks and smells like a tincture, so I assume I did it right.

How would you properly make tinctures from powders? Or is it better

just to mix the powder with juice?? I am going to be orderingg some

bulk herbs but unfortunately they don't come in their whole form only

as powders. Thanks for any advise.. unless someone knows where I can

order some Shatavari Roots and the used part of the Ashgwanda plant in

the USA.

Thanks

Hi Deana, I'm Satin, and new here. When I need tincture in a hurry, I

always use powder and percolate. Works like a charm and you get excellent

tincture in a few hours!

Hmm!, how did you know what ratio to use?,

I just make sure that, when the herbs and mixture settle, the bottle contains 3/4 herb (the herbs usually sink to the bottom) and 1/4 liquid floating on the top. So 3/4 of the bottle is herb and 1/4 of it is liquid.

also my wife has Hepatitis C, so I really do not think that Vodka is a really good

idea!!.

I have never used anything except vodka. Maybe someone else can offer suggestions. I personally think the vodka wouldn't hurt her, as it is such a small quantity.

The alcohol dissipates when put in hot tea, so I think it is really not an issue, unless a person has been alcoholic and wishes to avoid it for this reason.

The problem with powders is that they have already began to be broken down.

The violable oils are the first to be lost. The difference may be compared

to fresh ground coffee beans vs. packaged ground coffee. You can see, feel,

smell and taste the difference. Commercially (profit-wise, powdering offers

key advantages). As a general rule fresh is best. Cut and sifted (C/S) herbs

are a happy choice. One may still inspect the herb for quality. Use a herb

grinder just prior to tincturing ensures a higher potency. However even low

grade powders can make potent medicinals.

I know you can use apple cider vinegar in place of vodka, and discard

after 1 year.

Tinctures are herbs that have been put into jars or bottles and then

have alcohol or apple cider vinegar added and they sit for 2 weeks to 6

months and the liquid pulls all the potentcy from the herb into the

liquid. The herbs are then strained out from the liquid and the liquid

put back into the bottle... that is the tincture... which you take in a

little water or juice or tea... Tinctures make the shelf life of an

herb last longer.

Hope this helps ...

Hi, I am hoping your name is Satin as in Satin sheets and not Satin as

in the Devil. ;-) LOL , Anyway you said you use powder and

percolate. Does that mean like you run it through the coffemaker ?

Thx

Actually the latter is spelled Sat*A*n, not Sat*I*n.

No, this is laboratory glassware - I got it about 10 years ago when I was

taking my herbal certification course. It's a big funnel shaped glass thing

with a drip controller and surgical tubing. I put a non-bleached coffee

filter in, then the powder, then the alcohol (I always use Everclear -

purest thing there is, moreso than vodka) and then another coffee filter. I

put a bag over the top to prevent dust/evaporation. Then the tubing goes

through another bag into the jar, and I adjust it to drop about 1/sec.

Voila! Be sure and cover the recipient jar and put a slit for the tubing or

the alcohol evaporates and you lose most of your tincture!

No need to use alcohol. Especially when intended for more immediate use.

Other considerations

vinegar

honey

oils

glycerin

Alcohol is a choice when extracting substance that is not water soluble

(most things are)

or when a long shelf life is warranted or when insurance requirements must

be meet.

In all other cases other use something else. Alcohol is a poison in the

body.
