Anxiety/Nervousness solutions for a teenager ...

Hello everyone,

 

My name is Tru and I have a question ...

 

I am very much enjoying this group and it has help me out several times ... thank you. I am fairly new to using herbal remedies instead of synthetic drugs ... about 3 months now using the herbs and getting sensation results.

 

I do have a question that I was wondering if someone could help us out ... my 14 year old daughter just started grade 9 (high school) and is having trouble (although she won't admit this) with adjusting to the peer presures that go along with it. She gets herself so worked up stressing out that she throws up. I was looking to try some natural remedies to soothe her nerves and was wondering what is the best mixture for a 14 year old with this problem. There is nothing wrong with her ... she checked out fine at the doctor.

Rescue Remedy... a bach flower remedy is very well regarded for dealing with stress. It helps people and animals.

 

Though my understanding of homeopathy is that much like ayurvedic medicine that the subject needs to show an entire slate of personality rather than just symptoms (you are treating the individual not the disease).

 

I am not sure how this list views the Bach Flower Remedies as while they are an herbal approach they are clearly more homeopathic than much of the herbal and nutritive therapy I've seen discussed thus far.

Hello everyone,

 

My name is Tru and I have a question ...

 

I am very much enjoying this group and it has help me out several times ... thank you. I am fairly new to using herbal remedies instead of synthetic drugs ... about 3 months now using the herbs and getting sensation results.

 

I do have a question that I was wondering if someone could help us out ... my 14 year old daughter just started grade 9 (high school) and is having trouble (although she won't admit this) with adjusting to the peer presures that go along with it. She gets herself so worked up stressing out that she throws up. I was looking to try some natural remedies to soothe her nerves and was wondering what is the best mixture for a 14 year old with this problem. There is nothing wrong with her ... she checked out fine at the doctor.

Hi Tru, Motherwort is a wonderful tincture and I will send the article

through again so you have something to read on it. I use it to calm my

nerves when I feel like I am getting overwhelmed and am afraid of

yelling at the kids and not handiling situations in a calm relaxed

state. I also take it at night to help me relax before bed.

The Ayurvedic way of life is one I am studdying and finding it very very

useful and makes so much sense. Good luck on your journey.

Hi Tru :)

 

I've battled with horrible anxiety, mostly due to depression. The

anxiety came when I was 11 or 12, and the moderate-to-severe clinical

depression finally hit at almost 14. Even though I can honestly say

I've beaten the depression close to 100%, I still suffer from a little

anxiety here and there, particularly relating to lack of money coming

in and starting a new business.

 

After more than 13 years of battle, I've found several things that

have helped me, most of them I discovered in the last 2 years.

 

1.) I stay away from refined sugar. I'm sure you've seen my previous

posts, so I won't go into too much detail. Suffice it to say that

sugar causes an anxiety reaction in the brain, even if there isn't

anything to be anxious about. And since there IS something for your

daughter to be anxious about (growing up in junior high/high school

and being 14, with body and mind changes and lots of peer pressure,

that IS something that can cause anxiety), so this will be especially

important for her. Keep a watchful eye on her diet, as this is KEY to

a balanced mind.

 

2.) I get regular massage therapy. Now, I'm a massage therapist, but I

became one because that's how much I believe in it! Simplified, there

are 2 spheres of the nervous system: the sympathetic and the

parasympathetic. When the sympathetic nervous system is activated,

digestion stops and the " fight or flight " response kicks in.

Everything increases--heart rate, blood pressure, etc. Most people are

so stressed that their sympathetic nervous system is almost always

kicked in just a little. The other branch, the parasympathetic, works

just the opposite. Everything slows down and calms down. Massage

therapy actually stimulates the parasympathetic. It actually IS

therapeutically calming. It CAN lower blood pressure. It CAN decrease

anxiety.

 

3.) I read comforting religious/philosophical scripture. I do not

preach or try to convert, and I'm hoping this doesn't cross the line

in the eyes of the board. I'm also pleading the " it worked for me "

case here. :) But I recently found Hinduism, and no matter what I am

angry at, anxious about, no matter how unsettled I am and no matter

what kind of uneasiness or discontent I feel, the writings and

philosophy re-ground me and re-center me in utter peace and the

feeling that everything is going to be all right. Some more western

and more easily-accessible books that incorporate some of the same

basic tenets of wisdom are books written by John Demartini. I *think*

you can only get them through his website. A Google search will show

the way. (I chose Hinduism because it's peaceful, tolerant, nonviolent

and timelessly wise. If scriptures from other religions are as

uplifting to you, use them instead. Whatever works for you.) I tend to

read uplifting Universal things before going to sleep. It is only when

I ignore the wisdom I've read that I get into trouble. Otherwise, I

don't have much of a problem.

 

4.) Valerian root is GREAT in tea. The capsules themselves stink. But

I have a tea made by Yogi Tea (no vested interest, just a satisfied

customer) that is very sweet and it works even better for me than the

capsules/gelcaps/etc. I have it after dinner. Very lovely... ;)

 

5.) Vitamin B-Complex is a great supplement (I take it at lunchtime)

that helps arm the brain with everything it needs to combat stress.

Thought processes are enhanced, and the brain generally has what it

needs to function. A full deck, so to speak. Great stuff.

 

6.) Calcium-Magnesium with Zinc. Balanced trace minerals that most

people are deficient in. Also a good calming, anti-stress remedy, it

does much more, including prevent charliehorses and crampy muscles,

and it helps when breathing is difficult. I took it a lot last year

during asthma attacks. It calmed them within about 30 seconds.

 

7.) St John's Wort! Works even better for me than Valerian for my

anxiety. Valerian helped me sleep (and wake up better the next

morning!) and it helped me with bouts of anger. But St. John's Wort is

specifically good for anxiety. I take about 4-5 with dinner,

especially during " that time of the month " . I think it might help

balance hormones. It also totally helps with PMS, including cramping,

and I've heard tale that it has anti-cancer properties, too. But when

I'm anxious and down, it helps to pick me right up and make everything

OK again. :)

 

8.) Get chiropractic adjustments. They shouldn't hurt much, unless the

back is really screwed up. What does the spine have to do with

anxiety? Well, it has to do with the fact that the brain communicates

with the rest of the body via the nerve passageways, and they run

through the spinal cord. When vertebrae push up against the cord by

being knocked out of alignment (by sitting wrong, sleeping wrong,

sitting in one place for too long, you may not even know it has

happened and it does NOT take much at all!) these nerve passageways

are restricted. By getting regular spinal adjustments, you keep your

body in balance. Also, after an adjustment, your blood pressure spikes

downward, which is a neat de-stressing effect. I have pretty much

FLOATED out of my chiropractor's office! I felt so good and I really

couldn't explain how. It was a very subtle effect, and since I'm

pretty in tune with my body, I noticed it. But it was really neat. :)

 

Well, that's all I can think of for now. I tried to approach it from a

bunch of different angles, as we were multifaceted people, our

problems aren't usually due to ONE thing but more like a PATTERN of

things, and so a PATTERN of remedies that addresses the WHOLE person

has to be implemented, in my opinion. Hopefully the suggestions help. :)
