A Lucky Find!

Greetings Everyone,

My partners and I moved to our current home this past july and were

thrilled as it had many flower gardens. We never really took notice

of all the different plants until today when Brian was mowing the

lawn and smelled mint. Upon further exploration, it looks as though

the landlord's wife had a bit of an herb garden going.

I found Peppermint, spearmint, lemonbalm, " mint " (the kind you'd find

at the grocery store), sage, oregano and flat leaf parsley all

amongst the weeds and rosebushes.

The thing I'm looking to you all for is what to do with it all? I

cut most of it down and have now hung it up in my kitchen to dry. I

also planted the roots into pots so i can bring them in for the

winter. I know that I can make soem good teas and what not, but more

specifically I was wondering if anyone knew what lemonbalm and

spearmint were good for? I also wonder what the generic mint was good

for!

Curious to know how my family and I can benefit from this newfound

treat!

Thanks for helping me with this lucky find!

Lucky you!

Lemon balm is a great antidepressant/antispasmodic. Try a cup

of the hot tea after a stressful day. I used to have some growing

and I loved it during the wintertime blues. The book says it's also

a good carminative (mint family). I would like to have some more

growing where I am now.

Peppermint, spearmint, I use them interchangeably. Others

might not, try making some mild teas out of each of them and see

what you like better. Mint kicks my butt if I drink too much of it,

I like to use a hint of it in other tea mixes to bring out the

properties of the other herbs. Cool mint tea is refreshing on hot

days though. For me mint is more of a medicinal than a culinary

herb but others might have a better tolerance of it.
