Treating Post Partum Psychosis without medication

Hello all,

I'm expecting the arrival of our third child in about 3 weeks. With both my other children, I had a raging case of Post Partum Psychosis (hallucinations) and am not looking forward to round 3. After doing some research I have found that nobody (at least on Google) thinks that PPP can be treated without medication. Has anybody else had experience with this or knew anybody that has been able to treat this problem without medication?

Hi Lauren,

I don't have any experience with this myself, but I have seen many references (none of which I filed, sorry) which indicate that Post Partum Depression is linked to nutritional issues. As my own complete conjecture here, but I would expect that Post Partum Psychosis is similar, at least in some ways. The baby really does pull a lot of nutrition - especially key minerals - from you and it's growing really fast just before birth. Then, of course, there's the nursing. One specific reference I saw linked PPD to a zinc deficiency.

Anyway, I would highly recommend to make sure you're on Total Nutrition and keep your diet as good as possible. I saw another post to you on this subject with herb suggestions as well. I'm sure these things will help.

Best,

Kelli

I have experience with PPD, but not PPP. However, I would think that PPP is just a highly amplified version of PPD?

What helped me Immensely this last time was Virgin Coconut Oil. 4 Tbsps per day by spoon (or you can cook with it, or put it in smoothies, etc.). VCO is filled with 'good' fats that are essential for balance hormones. I just wish I'd found out about VCO Before I had the baby~ as it was, I had PPD for about 6 months. I started taking it when the baby was 5 months old, and within 3- 4 wks, my hormones were Soooo much better! I felt normal again. Plus, VCO is Very healthy for the baby too. Tropical Traditions is where I get mine from, and they also have a message board where you can ask questions. :-)

You probably would also need to take Total Nutrition, and some other things~ I suggest talking to Doc & /or finding a naturopathic doctor in your area to help you.

I am Sure you can handle this without going on pharmaceutical meds. :-)

Sounds like a good idea. The only ND in our area almost killed my sister in childbirth. She is going to have charges (criminal) filed against her by the health dept. How soon should I start taking it? You are also a breastfeeding advocate? I am having trouble with the whole nursing thing. I have size e cup boobs and as you know that presents "special" challenges. Any advice?

Lauren~

You can take VCO anytime~ the sooner the better!

As far as nursing goes, I'd suggest that you find a La Leche League in your area. They are Fabulous at helping new moms with breastfeeding issues. Here is the website for the USA, just click on your state, then your city/town, and it'll take you to local organizations. http://www.lalecheleague.org/WebUS.html Usually LLL leaders know of any good lactation consultants in the area too... (Unfortunately, around here, there are no 'good' ones.)

A good book to have (if you don't already have one) is "The Complete Book of Breastfeeding" by Eiger & Olds. This book is very down to earth, has tons of photos and illustrations, and has chapters for special situations. I highly recommend this book to all my doula clients. :-)

Really? Most of the time they just browbeat you for not following your "instincts" and treat you like you're damaged goods if you don't wet yourself at the prospect of breastfeeding. What information do you have about LARGE boobs? like make your back spasm LARGE. Does anybody know HOW MUCH that changes breastfeeding? Do you realize that when you are hunched over you can feel your spine separating from the weight? Does that book have anything about that? Is it even addressed?

Thanks for your info,

-Shelby

Shelby,

I'm sorry if you've had a bad experience with LLL. LLL was founded by moms who needed/wanted support for themselves because no one was breastfeeding back then (not around them anyway). The LLL organization is supposed to be a nurturing supportive place where breastfeeding moms support each other and share experiences with new moms. The group I attend is great~ no one pushes anything on anyone (which is the way these groups are Supposed to be). You Are supposed to follow your instincts as a mom (that's what we have them for) and you do what works best for yourself and your family.

It doesn't matter what size your breasts are, you can breastfeed. Yes, the book I recommended does bring up size. It doesn't matter if you have the biggest breasts in the world or are completely flat~ it's not the breasts themselves that make milk, it's the milk glands inside/under. As long as you are healthy and have no major medical issues you can breastfeed your babies.

I DO understand back pain. I always had back and neck pain (and tend to migraines). I've nursed 6 babies and my last one is still nursing at 2 yrs 3 mos and she shows no sign of wanting to quit yet. She's heavy, and I'm a regular patient at my chiropractor's office because my neck and back are out regularly. ;-)

Anyway, very large breasts are not a reason to not nurse. You are Not supposed to be hunched over to nurse. You need to prop the baby up with pillows so that your back is Not in spasm and you are Not hunched over. It may take some practice with different holds to see what works best, but it can (and is) done by all size women regularly.

This thread has gotten really off-topic, so if you want to continue this off-list, feel free to email me directly.

While, I do agree with most of what everyone is saying. I have had both PPD and Post-Partum Psychosis (although, it was considered "borderline" - how I don't know, since I threw a knife at my husband and do not remember it to this day - that seems pretty - psychotic to me.). From personal experience both are heck to go through - although post-partum psychosis is a full blown nightmare (what I imagine hell-on-earth woudl be like) - Treating PPD is a good deal easier to treat that PPP. There are some folks out there that think PPP is an amplified version of PPD. Having lived through both, I'm not so sure I agree with that analagy. They seem like two totally different things. Of course, all women are different. If I were pregnant again, I'd consult Doc or a Naturopathic Midwife on the subject. If you are going to breastfeed, also make sure that you contact LLL as well.
