Katji,

Your last paragraph kind of confused me, didn't understand a lot

of those words!! You said eat something probiotic in weeks following,

what is that? I'm not sure I can get anything like that. I'm just 18,

and barely starting to look into herbs, so don't know much! It's all

confusing to me!

oh - i'm sorry!

probiotics are the opposite of antibiotics: instead of killing bacteria and

stuff, they promote it. or more accurately, they *are* bacteria.

specifically you want to see the lactobacillus strains and the acidophilus

strains, though not always together. you can buy probiotics in pill form,

but they're vastly suboptimal - you're better off to make some real kefir

(which is fermented milk), eat some lactofermented kimchi or sauerkraut

(not the kind made with vinegar), some bubbies brand pickles (which are

also lactofermented), or if it's all you can do, then at least some very

high quality full fat organic plain yogurt, such as stoneyfield farm or

butterworks farm if you're in new england.

so, just like a regular antibiotic from your doctor will kill off all the

bacteria in your gut, good and bad, garlic also has antibacterial

qualities, and will kill off bacteria in your gut too. but you need this

bacteria for your gut to function properly, and most americans lack it

because lactofermented foods are not common in our diets anymore. (pickles,

etc are made with vinegar these days...) that's why so many americans have

intestinal cramping, acid reflux, etc (that and the consumption of gluten

grains - the two issues go hand in hand).

so, because you're taking garlic, you're killing off any of the good stuff

that you might have in your gut. so you need to make sure you put it all

back again. more clear now?
