While the moon's away the meteors will play. Sky watchers are in for a treat tonight as the Perseid meteor shower makes its annual pass by Earth.

The absence of the moon in the night sky means the show will be more spectacular than it has been in a decade or more, says Planetarium astronomer Scott Young.

"Some of the meteors are nice and bright, but some of them are fainter and if the moon is up you just can't see through all the extra lights that are in the sky," Young said.

"It's kind of the difference between being in the city and being out in the dark country sky. You can see a lot fainter things when you are away from those extra lights."

Each shooting star is a piece of cosmic dust the size of a grain of sand burning up as it enters the earth's atmosphere.

"We are going through a big dust bunny on the 11th," Young said.

The meteor shower will start about 11 p.m., but the best view will be about 3 or 4 a.m., Young said.

"This is sort of the Old Faithful of astronomical events," he said. "You don't need any equipment, no binoculars or telescopes, just a lawn chair and bug spray and you're good."

The weather forecast calls for partly cloudy skies Wednesday, clearing overnight.

I've noticed many shooting stars in my night sky in the past week or so...
