hi, my 14 month old has smelly urine. He seems to be hydrated although

he doesn't drink near as much as I wish he would.

How can

i get him to drink more?

Is this amonia smell dangerous for him?

I don't give him soda, just 1/2 juice and water combos or water only.

He eats well, not much grains or sugary foods. He still nurses at

night and wears clothe diapers. The smell is strongest if he wears a

wet diaper for an hour or more. I may be silly, but could it be his

diapers? I was them in vinegar and baking soda and they don't smell

from the dryer.

thanks, theresa

Is this the first wetting in the A.M. that his urine smells? For some reason my baby has an amonia smell but only on his first wetting of the day? So, I suppose I'd be interested in the answer to this one also.

yes, and also throughout the day if he stays in a

diaper for more than an hour. I have been using clothe

diapers since his birth, and this just started

happening. The only change has been that I started

using castille soap on his diapers instead of the old

hand dishwashing soap that I used to use. Last night,

I washed his diapers in dawn, and soaked them in the

dawn. and washed them three times this morning in

plain water to get all the soap and oils out of them.

I washed the liners in bleach, and then washed them

with the covers in regular dawn and plain water. I

hope this does the trick. I still would like Patrick

to drink more. He is really stocky. 35 " and 32lbs. He

only drinks 3 or 4 6 oz. glasses of 1/2 water and 1/2

apple juice a day. He still nurses 1 or 2x a day, but

that is all the fluids I can get him to drink.

Thank you, Theresa

I use cloth dipes, also. This does happen with Nathan also. It takes longer than an hour for the smell to come up, I think it's the urine collecting in the cloth. I've had to use the disposable type at church because they won't let me send cloth - even if I were to come in and change him myself. Oddly enough I don't notice the smell in the disposable dipes. I can only guess there is some kind of preservative or deodorant that keeps it from happening. I don't think it's coming from inside the baby. Although, I'd be curious to know if it could.

My first gut instinct is that he's not getting enough clear fluids

(breastmilk being a clear fluid also). Juice really isn't necessary, it's

considered empty calories for a baby. IMO, you should nurse more often and

give less sippy cups of juice/water.

Thank you for the great advice. Thank you all. I

rewashed my cloth diapers in the dawn and the odor is

not as noticeable. I am pushing the fluids more too.

Both the nursing and the sippys. I think we are on the

up side of whatever this was and will continue to get

better. Thanks again for all the great responses.

My first son always wore disposable diapers. His hair would smell of an

ammonia type smell when it was wet. This went on for a few years. I

questioned my pediatrician who could not smell anything (of course his hair

was always dry there) and he never worried about it. It finally went away

and I never did figure it out. I keep watching these posts to see if anyone

has ideas :)

Thank you, I will try that. I have never even thought

of line drying them. How silly of me. And I remember

my grandmother drying whites on the line to " freshen "

them all the time. Thanks, Theresa

Wow! That is so scary. I mean, an otherwise healthy

toddler with acute amonia smell. I have 4 other

children who were all breastfed and all wore cloth

diapers, but no smells like this. He was my diabetic

induced baby. He weighed 10 pounds 3 weeks early. He

has never been imunized. All of the others weighed 8

and 9 pounds and were not immunized. Patrick, the

youngest is the only one who does not drink a lot of

fluids. He has done this since he was born. He refused

any bottles and would only nurse. Now he drinks some

from a sippy cup , but not much. He eats anything

though. He eats greens, even arugala! SP? Oh, well,

the mystery continues...
