I mentioned it to someone today and although she never tasted it, she said it sounded like something called Thieve's Tonic. She said during the bubonic plague in Europe, thieves used to break into peoples' house and steal jars of tonic made from onions, garlic, ginger, horseradish and vinegar because it cured the disease. The lady wasn't sure of the exact name of the story, just the gist of how it went. I thought it was interesting. I have read many accounts of how garlic was sought after during the plague, but hadn't heard about the tale of the tonic combo before.
