I have never grown spinach before and neither has my mom or SIL so I don't know who else to ask...... appx a week ago I was looking at my spinach and thought "is it ready already? naaah couldn't be this soon" the leaves were smaller than any I'd ever bought at a grocery store. Well this week it's growing things in the center, does this mean it's getting ready to be picked or that it's already past picking time?

And on to my next question. Like a dork I planted a few rows and didn't mark down what they were. I know one row is zucchini and one is cucumbers. One has orange flower type things growing on it and the other row doesn't. Anyone know which is which?

Oooh, pick it quick... its going to seed. You can prolong your harvest season by pinching off the stalks in the center, but the sooner you pick it the better. Once it goes to seed it becomes bitter and tough.

Hi Candace. I do alot of gardening. I looked at the picture of your spinach. You need to pick the spinach now. It looks like it is going to seed. There are different varieties of spinach, so the leaves will be different sizes. Also re the other picture, is there a small round green knob under the blossom? If so, it might be summer squash, the kind that is round with scalloped edges. If that is what it is, pick them when they are about 11/2" in diameter to 2". They are really good.

Zucchini and Cucumber flowers look very similar, it's the leaves that

help you tell them apart.

The one in the picture with the yellow flowers looks more like

zucchini (or other squash) but i can quite tell. Can you take a

closer picture of each plant individually?

Also, i have been picking my veggies like radish and carrot, before

they go to seed (bolt) and this is when you see the first sign of

flower buds. From the looks of the picture, they look ready (and

yummy!)

Seeds of change has a great borad for all gardening questions, i have

learned a ton by just reading the posts. If your interested, check

out their website or email me.

Since this is my first garden I don't know how to tell when to pick what. I

dug up a beet the other day and it was a teensy tiny cute little thing! Not

quite ready!

I suppose other things grow faster. What about potatos? How long do they

take?

Okay, I went and picked the spinach last night and it didn't have much flavor, kind of tasted like lettuce. I've never eaten spinach before, just put it in my potassium broth so I'm not sure if that's what it's supposed to taste like!?!

While I was out there, I started poking around and ended up noticing all kinds of things ready to be picked. Peas, green beans, carrots, and the kahlrabis were almost done! YUM!

DH told me to stop eating it all and save some but fresh garden veggies to me is like chocolate to some....I just can't have it in my house and not eat it ALL!
