Guest guest
I read somewhere that fevers are a GOOD thing and a body's way of fighting off something. Well... I've also read fevers are dangerous and you should give your babies/kids something to bring it down. Little Mr. Brock (23 months old) is burning up tonight. I don't have a thermometer but his entire body is hot. I don't think I've ever felt him this hot before teething or not. He won't eat much of anything and (this is VERY unlike him) won't drink anything. Any quick suggestions? Candace Everything will turn out well in the end. If things are not well now, then it is not yet the end.
Guest guest
The not drinking and eating them is normal. Their little bodies can't deal with the digestive process when they are sick. It is absolutely totally normal. I would try some kind of homeopathic remedy. You say burning up ? How hot? As long as it isn't over 103 you are fine. Try a cold wash cloth on his forehead; get him undressed. - Candace Podratz herbal remedies Sunday, July 04, 2004 1:52 AM Herbal Remedies - Little Brocker I read somewhere that fevers are a GOOD thing and a body's way of fighting off something. Guest guest
Enter my domain. My little 4 year old is a fever factory. When he gets fevers (and whenever he gets sick he gets one) they burn hot and he's been this way his whole life. The fever goes in waves. This is the body's natural way of killing the problem and giving the body a rest. You don't need to give him something unless he's been in the 104 and over range for over 6 hours solid. To give you an example, Cortlan will usually run a fever of 102 to 104. His personal high is 105.6. But every 3 hours or so it will come down to 101 or lower for about 2 hours or so. When he has a fever he NEVER wants to eat and only asks for water. That and he might wake up for 15 minutes at a time every 2 hours or so. I have to wake him up to get water down him. Make sure he gets water almost every time he opens his mouth and a few times he doesn't. The body has bigger fish to fry (that was punny) than food and it is normal for high fevers to have the digestion system go dormant. Don't worry about that, I promise you after he gets better he'll make up for lost time in the eating department. Any other questions, Just Ask? -Shelby P.S. I'm going to bed now because I was up to 3am doing a midterm on computers. I can't believe that the last sentence said "If technology gets any more expensive, I'm going to have to break out the fishnet stockings to afford e-mail." I REALLY hope my professor has a sense of humor. Guest guest
Well I hope Little Brock is better this morning, kids fevers tend to be higher at night. The temp does help the body combat the illness but there is a cut off point of when the systems will begin to have side effects from the fever. I usually just keep a close monitor on it and if it goes above a 102 I find a way to get it back down a little. You can rub him in rubbing alcohol and soak wash clothes in it and put them under his arms and in his groin and one around the back of his neck. Also with a fever you want to make sure that it doesn’t last more than a couple days, it’s not only the temperature that is important but the duration of the temperature…the body can only handle heat like that a few days. Try to keep fluids down him, even if he will not eat, really encourage fluids because at high temps the body will dehydrate quickly. I usually make some orange juice popsicles and stuff like that. Hope he is better soon. Stacy I read somewhere that fevers are a GOOD thing and a body's way of fighting off something. Well... Guest guest
: ) Even some one without a sense of humor would have to chuckle at that one. I need to buy a thermometer, I have no idea how high his fever was. I went and checked on him after he'd been "sleeping" a few hours and he was awake tossing and turning and was still very hot. Before he went to bed we lay him on the couch with a cold pack on his back and that got him to sleep pretty fast, I think he was uncomfortably hot. I was worried about him all night but when he got up this morning he was a little warm but back to his eatin drinkin self. I'm not even sure what caused the fever. ~sigh~ They sure make you worry. Guest guest
They sure do!! I remember not too long ago, Travis had a high fever, but no apparent reason for it. His glands weren't swolen, no bites or scratches or infections. Just something his body needed to do. We soaked his feet in hot water with garlic and ginger in it. He would sweat profusely for a little bit, then his fever would drop dramatically. And his feet sure smelled good!! Guest guest
He's moody today and not eating or drinking MUCH but he is eating and drinking which is better than yesterday. Guest guest
Rubbing alcohol doesn't necessarily bring a fever down, but it does cool the skin/body down because alcohol evaporates so quickly. Fever is the body's natural mechanism to fight things off, so you don't want to bring it down (unless it really is excessive as others have said). Normally, you'd want to get in a hot bath and drink ginger tea to help the body's process in fighting off whatever has invaded. I'm so glad to hear that Brock's doing better today Candace!! Guest guest
I would expect his fever to come back tonight. Just make sure he gets enough water. -Shelby P.S. For those who have trouble getting total tonic down your kids, just put a dropperful in a couple swigs of cranberry juice. It masks it well and actually gives that cranberry juice a cool after taste. Guest guest
He has a big bite on his arm at first I thought it was a mosquito bite but it's gotten too big for that. Maybe a spider bite!?! In MN we don't have really poisonous spiders, though, they don't last through our winters. So I don't think that's what it is. Plus it seems to be going away at the normal speed. He woke up screaming at 3 this morning so I went and got him and brought him into bed with me, boy was he HOT. Thought maybe he was thirsty so I gave him a sippy of juice which he gulped down. He tossed and turned and whined for an hour and then BLAUGH threw up (thankfully over the side of the bed.) Apx 5 seconds after he vomited he was asleep and then slept through the rest of the night. Today he seems normal again but we'll see if it comes back.
