bi-polar at a young age

My son was also diagnosed with bi-polar at a young age. The medicine made him

psychotic and suicidal. He was hospitalized. We took him off the med's and he

was fine. I taught him at home after that, and he had no signs of

being bi-polar. He is now a healthy, productive young man.

We need to NOT listen to those in authority until we have done all the

back-ground checks and done our own research on medications and side-effects. It

is vitally important and could save a life. Michele

I agree with this also. Although my son isn't bi-polar he was diagnosed as

having ADHD ( which couldn't have been further from the truth) and was of

course put onto medication which did not work ( surprise surprise) and only

made him feel tired and lethargic all day. After a long frustrating search

for a competent Dr he was finally diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. Once

again he was put onto medication which actually turned him violent,

extremely so! in that twice he tried to kill me. However as my son got

older he himself weaned himself off all medications and went back to a more

natural approach and today he lives an almost normal life and WITHOUT toxic

drugs!

How long was he on medication before he was able to ween himself off and at what

age?  Did the medication have any long lasting and detrimental effects that did

not go away after he stopped taking them?  Did his neurological system return to

normal?  Is he taking any supplements (natural supplements)-which ones?  How

does a person with aspergers get off meds and return to normal? Does he have a

full time job and a family of his own?

My son was on some sort of medication from the age of 11 and it wasn't until

he was nearly 18 before he weaned himself off the drugs. I can still see in

him the effects of those drugs but not to the crazy extreme that he had

while on the drugs. No he has not returned to " normal " , he still has

Asperger's and probably always will. I would love to be able to get him to

undergo chelation therapy or some other homeopathic course to fully rid his

body of the damage caused by the drugs but as he lives in a different State

to me and I have only seen him once in the last 7 years I don't have the

influence on him but I keep trying to get him pointed in that direction.

Yes he has a full time job and is earning good money and just recently

successfully completed 3 courses he required to work in the Hospitality

industry. No he is not married nor does he have a girl friend although he

has had a couple of relationships that didn't work out which I do believe

are because of his " problem " .

He refuses to take any further medication for his asperger's and I for one

do not blame him and support him on that decision.

Just a comment on Aspergers -- there is no medication that is for Aspergers

itself, but medication is often used to help with/target behaviors or anxiety,

etc. Glad your son is doing well. My 20 yr old Aspie is off to college this

fall, just finished 2 yrs at our local community college and is transferring.

Yes I understand that that is true and it showed by the fact that none of

the medications he was on really made any difference to him except to make

him either extremely violent or extremely lethargic, it also showed that

none of the Dr's who " treated " him really knew what they were doing!. Great

to hear that your son is doing well too.
