Guest guest
Was wondering if anyone knew of a alternate maybe natural treatment for one who has iron deficiency? My wife has low iron but when she takes the pills doctors recommend she gets very constipated. Is there anything she can take or eat to help? Guest guest
Iron deficiency Aside from having to learn first why you are low in iron, you can use the herb Yellow Dock. It contains iron in moderate quantities in a highly absorbable and easy to assimilate form. I struggled with anemia all my life, in spite of a decent diet, until I started using AFA. Guest guest
Hi, There are iron-rich foods she can consume, I suggest mainly red meats: liver, kidney, beef and lamb steaks; seafood like oysters and mussels, canned sardines. Iron is best absorbed from meat. If your wife is vegetarian, it is best to use cereal, greens (boiled), baked beans, sesame and pumpkin seeds, beetroot, wholemeal bread etc. Remember that iron from non-meat sources is absorbed in blood with difficulty, but vitamin-C foods like orange, orange juice, lemon and tomatoes can help. I have actually just published an article on iron-rich foods for anemia, you can find it below: http://selfalchemy.blogspot.com/2009/03/iron-defficiency-anemia-what-iron-rich.h\ tml My sister had a nasty nasty iron defficiency anemia (she had hemoglobin 6 when the normal level begins at 12) about three months ago and I was in charge with the cooking so I have become quite aware of the problem! However, I suggest her not to quit taking tablets in exchange for food. The food doesn't usually provide as much as tablets do. Perhaps best to discuss the problem and her proposed diet to the doctor, maybe he will reduce the iron tablet intake. Taking a constipation treatment may be advisable as well - I recommend senna leaves, frangula (frangula tea does wonders if you can find it), consuming cereal / muesli / oats, prune juice, castor oil, flaxseed etc. There is also the option of consulting a homeopathic doctor. They have very good prescription medicine that have no side effects. But it takes a little longer than with medication to get better. Guest guest
Sorry I¹m coming very late to this discussion, but are you absolutely certain you are iron deficient? There are many reason for anemia for which iron supplementation or additional dietary intake are contraindicated. Among them, thalassemia major and minor and hemochromatosis. Iron deficiency is conventional medicine¹s knee jerk reaction to anemia and additional iron can actually worsen the problem.
Guest guest
You also need a doctor who knows what he/she is doing when testing for iron. My daughter's friend was told she needed extra iron, but it was very harmful to her as she had hemochromatosis. They ended up taking blood from her once a week.
