Hi group,

I am mostly a lurker here, but have gained a lot of knowledge from all of

you.  Thank you very much!

My elderly mother (78) is recovering from falling over the dogs, and sprained

her

hip and butt muscles.  This happened about 6 weeks ago.  She can now walk

without a walker, cane or wheelchair.  She is still weak though, and she doesn't

eat correctly. Not enough to keep a bird alive, much less help her regain her

strength.  I was wondering if you all had suggestions on something nutritious,

besides ensure.  That stuff is very nasty and she refuses to drink it (I don't

blame her, YUCK!).

She can only eat small amounts at a time.  She does eat things, like yogurt,

oatmeal & toast, peanut butter sandwiches, spaghetti O's, cereal, fruits and

veggies (not enough).  She is allergic to eggs, has osteoporosis, irregular

heartbeat, and is on 6 or 8 different meds.  She has started taking her Centrum

silver daily vits. again, plus b-12, b-6 and vit. E.

Would protein meal replacement drinks be good for her?  Does anyone have

suggestions on which kind is drinkable?  What about green whole food powders?

Thank you,

Vicki

Salam, dear lady

Welcome back for your dear Mom.

And, deep respect to you for caring you give to her, which will remain for you

to enjoy, when you reach her age, for sure.

Natural honey is a wonderful drink for her, mixed with water or any liquid she

likes.

Also Black Molases does the same boost for energy and immunity

Bless you all

When I care for invalids I take a tip from Edgar Cayce.....I

give them beef extracts and its delicious....its like

drinking a steak. Simply cube up or ground like ground beef

your beef and put it in a glass jar with the lightly screwed

on. You need to let steam escape. Put this jar into a sauce

pan of water that reaches about 1/2 way up the sides of the

jar. The beef will eventually dispel all its liquids into a

broth and they drink it. I even take this mixture into the

hospitals when they are admitted ( we all know about

hospital food and the fact they have gotten lazy with the

Ensure bandwagon.

Hi Vickie, I guess it's up to taste buds for Ensure. My mom loves

the vanilla and so does one of my sons. I haven't tasted it myself.

Glad your mom has improved so much, walking on her own. I can't

think of anything specific about food at the moment. But regarding

supplements, make sure she's getting Vit. D along with any calcium

supplements. And chicken soup or broth may not be fattening, but I

still think it's great when feeling ill.
