Guest guest
Hello -- I am peri-menopausal, have been for many months now. In recent months, in the week or so before my period starts, I have terrible insomnia, usually awakening at the same time each night (right around 2am) and then having my brain totally wake up and not shut up, so I can't sleep and have to get up and watch tv to engage my brain and turn off my monkey mind. It's getting really frustrating, as then I have to make it through the say on just a few hours of sleep, and tumble into bed early the next night. Is there something natural which can help correct this? Andrea NZ
Guest guest
Hi Andrea, What you're experiencing is elevated cortisol, which is very common in women during " the change " . It's important to remember that changing hormones impact the entire endocrine system and the adrenal glands play a major role in the symptoms you'll experience throughout your transition -- which as you already know can be quite long. It would be wise to nurture your adrenals and balance your hormones now as your symptoms can get progressively worse. As just one example, insomnia and depression are closely linked. Most say insomnia is a " symptom " of depression. Personally, I believe that it's a big contributor to it's cause. Weight gain is also linked with elevated cortisol as well as several serious health conditions. In answer to your question... yes! There are many natural approaches, but I don't make recommendations without knowing much more about you. Every woman experiences peri in a unique way and addressing the CAUSE of your insomnia rather than suggesting an herb or supplement to ease the SYMPTOM is essential. Guest guest
Andrea, I attended a lecture one time on this sort of thing. He said that women were mostly right brained and tend to have right brain kind of problems such as: brain is noisy, heart beats fast irregular, if you close your eyes and put your feet together you will sway to the left. He suggested for this kind of problem put a little bit of purfume your favorite kind under the right nostral of your nose not both sides though. The other suggestion was to see what side you sway to and windmill that arm till you are stable with your eyes closed. It was a fun lecture by Dr Denofero do not think I spelled his name right he was the president of the neurological board. I figure it will not hurt anything to try. Let me know if it works DP , Andrea Gauland <dreaquince wrote: > > Hello -- I am peri-menopausal, have been for many months now. Guest guest
Hi Andrea Sorry to hear you're not sleeping well. If you can't sleep during the week before your period starts it could indicate you have a progesterone deficiency. A progesterone imbalance may give you peri-menopausal symptoms (hot flushes, changes in period heaviness and length, irritability) as well as insomnia. I suggest you do a search on natural progesterone- there's heaps of info about it on the internet. It really helps! Patient's advocates is a clinic run by nurses in NZ that have useful info on their website. There's natural products for sleep at the pharmacy (5HTP etc), but looking into the hormone imbalances and treating them may help more than just sleep problems. Hope this helps. Good luck.
