This bill has already passed in the Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee last month on the 15th and one more committee must pass it before it is sent to the senate for their committee approvals - where we will have to begin all over again to oppose it. If successful in the senate we will hold a rally before the final vote as our last effort . Next Monday , October 6th, 2008, the final assembly committee to hear Bill A2933 will be the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Please contact all the appropriations committee members listed below and ask them to oppose bill A2 933. Call them and Email them -- information below. Tell the assembly people that this bill is not only exclusionary and making natural health businesses and practitioners illegal , but will be expensive for the state to monitor and enforce. Remind them that when t his bill passed in Ohio that about 800 practitioners were initially arrested and hundreds of lives and businesses were destroyed by those who had to enforce the bill. There are no practitioners left in Ohio other than dietitians and few health shops other than the medically approved GNC. Guest guest
After receiving this post about the “Dietitian/Nutritionist Licensing Act” (NOT the Dietitians Monopoly Bill as it was referred to in the last message), I felt compelled to reply. I am a Registered Dietitian in the state of New Jersey. I am also part of this particular list-serv because many aspects of alternative health (healing with food, herbs, supplements, etc) are very much part of my field. I would like you all to know before I continue further, that my purpose of this message is not to convince you to feel a certain way, but to educate you as to the truthfulness of what is been purposed by the state of New Jersey. Also, I want you not be assured that I benefit no personal gain by your acceptance or rejection of this bill. With that being said, allow me to explain the facts (rather than opinions) of this bill. New Jersey is currently only one of 4 states in the nation that does not require licensure of nutrition professionals. Put into other words – you, me, your five year of brother – all of us can legally refer to ourselves and market ourselves “nutritionists” or “dietitians” or whatever similar word we choose. In the 46 other states in the country, this is illegal. Under the new proposed bill, only people who have completed the required educational experience, proven their knowledge through an exam, and continue to prove their learning through continuing education can call themselves a “nutritionist” or “dietitian”, etc. In other medical professions this is also expected and accepted – I cannot call myself a Medical Doctor, Registered Nurse, Physical Therapist, etc. Outside of the medical professions I cannot call myself a Certified Personal Accountant or an FBI Agent etc…you get the point. Why should non-nutrition professionals be able to proclaim themselves as such? Requiring only qualified professionals to hold the titles relevant to their field allows the public to know that when they seek out professionals such as doctors, lawyers, etc, these people hold certain degrees and are qualified to practice in their field. This new bill WILL NOT prohibit the public from accessing nutrition supplements, facts or information. It will, however, allow the public to know that the nutrition advice and information they are receiving comes from a professional with a qualified background who is basing their advice on proven (peer reviewed, published) research, and not on the drive for profits in a money rich industry. It will allow the citizens of New Jersey to feel confident they are receiving safe advice and information from knowledgeable nutrition experts. If you have further questions about his bill, I encourage you to visit the website www.assemblydems.com or use a search engine to locate current articles about the bill. With the presidential election approaching, I hope you are already doing that rather than allowing email messages or personal blogs to influence your political views. However, if you have any questions about his bill in NJ, feel free to contact me. Thanks for reading.
