Red wine molecules known as resveratrol appear to work in a similar fashion to commonly used antidepressant drugs. Resveratrol exhibits similar biological action to drugs like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Tofranil and Celexa. Well, vintners could have told the researchers this long ago. They didn’t need scientific proof. Researchers at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, reporting in the early online edition of Biochemical Biophysical Research Communications, state that resveratrol is a mild but “potentially useful molecule in the treatment of depression.†Their study was conducted in a laboratory dish, not humans, but resveratrol was tested alongside molecules used to make commonly used anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs and exhibited the same characteristics. As a natural enzyme inhibitor, resveratrol inhibits both monoamine oxidase and 5-hydroxytryptamine, as many prescribed drugs do today and if resveratrol shows similar behavior in humans, researchers say “it may have interesting therapeutic potential for improving the pharmacological treatment of depression.†Resveratrol pills may become the next generation’s “happy pills.†-Copyright 2006 Bill Sardi, Knowledge of Health, Inc. posted by Knowledge of Health | 1:15 PM
