PANUPS: Methyl Iodide Registraton Denied and More!

News Flash: EPA has just denied registration of proposed fumigant

pesticide methyl iodide. Thousands of members from PAN partner groups

let EPA know that methyl iodide was not an acceptable replacement for

methyl bromide. Read more.

PAN Reports: The indigenous Haida people are struggling to protect

their lands from the aerial spraying of pesticides on Long Island,

Alaska. Fearing this will lead to poisoning of streams and clear

cutting of the wilderness they depend upon for survival, they have

joined forces with other environmental activists to stop a corporation

from destroying their native lands. Learn how you can support this effort.

Hawaii

Bug spray sickens elementary school students. Hospitals treat 44

nauseated children after winds carry a pesticide to their elementary

school from a nearby homeowner spraying his garden with pesticide.

Story here from the Honolulu Star Bulletin.

Canada: The Canadian Cancer Society is urging municipalities across

New Brunswick to ban the use of pesticides on residential and public

property. The Cancer Society says evidence linking pesticides with

cancer is growing, and it simply doesn't make sense to use a substance

that could cause cancer to make a lawn look pretty. CBC News reports.

Africa: Over 50,000 tons of obsolete pesticides need to be cleaned up

in Africa. The chemical companies oversold these poisons years ago,

and humanitarian aid agencies, governments, and others failed to

ensure they were labeled and stored properly. Now, their containers

are corroding and the pesticides are contaminating soil and water.

Most can't be burned or buried. A coalition of groups, including PAN

UK and PAN Africa are working to deal with this problem. Progress is

now being made in South Africa and Ethiopia.
