Guest guest
(http://www.rushholt.com/petition.html) Sign the Voter Confidence Petition in Support of H.R. 550 Anything of value should be auditable. Votes are valuable, and each voter should have the knowledge-and the confidence-that his or her vote was recorded and counted as intended. Passage of this bill (H.R. 550) will be a big step in restoring that confidence, which is the very foundation of our democratic republic. Link: http://www.rushholt.com/petition.html (http://www.rushholt.com/petition.html) RushHolt.com On April 6 and 7, hundreds of citizen activists from across the country will join a coalition of organizations in Washington D.C. to ask their Members of Congress to cosponsor H.R.550, Rep. Rush Holt’s Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act. While our citizen lobbyists are meeting with Members of Congress in DC, let's get the phones ringing during the Lobby Days with the same message from constituents back at home! A call to your Representative during this time will amplify this message and multiply our voices immeasurably! Call the Capitol Switchboard and Ask for Your Representative’s Office. Call 202-225-3121 on Thursday April 6 or Friday April 7 The Capitol Switchboard at 202-225-3121 will be able to connect you to your Representative’s office even if you are unsure of his or her name. Urge your Representative to support HR 550, with this suggested sample message: Reports of e-voting computer crashes, glitches and malfunctions have come in from across the country, and a voter-verified paper ballot is just a common sense protection under the circumstances. It’s the ONLY way we can confirm that the electronic voting machines have counted our votes accurately. I urge Representative _________ to co-sponsor HR 550, and safeguard our electoral system against computer errors.†HR 550 would: ◠require a voter verified paper record of every vote, ◠establish mandatory random hand counted audits to verify the accuracy of electronic tallies, and ◠prohibit the use of secret software and wireless communication devices in voting machines. Our current federal regulations permit computerized voting without requiring a voter-verified paper record that would allow voters to confirm that a hard copy of their votes has been recorded correctly. The history of computer crashes, failures, and malfunctions that have occurred since electronic voting was first employed make clear the necessity of passing this common-sense legislation in time for the 2006 elections. HR 550 has already earned the bipartisan support of more than 165 Congressional cosponsors. The recent change in leadership of the Committee on House Administration has created a new opportunity for passage of this vital election integrity measure this year. ....................................... Here is an easy action to ask for support of HR 550 by email, it only takes a minute: _http://www.congressweb.com/cweb4/index.cfmorgcode=VTUSA & hotissue=1_ (http://www.congressweb.com/cweb4/index.cfmorgcode=VTUSA & hotissue=1) ........................................................... April 4, 2006 A change in the leadership of the House Administration Committee (the Congressional committee that oversees voting reform) has created a new opportunity to pass a critical piece of legislation. The Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act (H.R. 550) is a long overdue measure to ensure verifiable, auditable, and reliable elections. As you know, four months ago, I organized a petition drive through my website that asked people to sign onto a letter to the House Administration Committee. The letter, you can sign by clicking here, urges the committee to take action on H.R. 550. On Friday, April 7th, the full list of signatures will be delivered to the committee in Washington, D.C. That list, together with a similar petition organized by I Count Coalition, have garnered signatures from more than 40,000 Americans who love their democracy enough to call for auditable elections. Also, the I Count Coalition will bring hundreds of citizen activists to Washington, D.C. this Thursday, April 6th and Friday, April 7th to advocate for an immediate vote on H.R. 550. Previous efforts to raise support for my bill helped generate 24 new co-sponsors from both parties. Today, 168 members of Congress from both parties support the bill. If you would like to be a citizen advocate in Washington, D.C. this week, please visit the I Count Coalition's website. If you haven't signed my petition already, you may do so by clicking here. As I have said before, anything of value should be auditable. Votes are valuable, and each voter should have the knowledge-and the confidence-that his or her vote was recorded and counted as intended. Passage of H.R. 550 will be a big step in restoring that confidence, which is the very foundation of our democratic republic. Sincerely, RUSH HOLT Member of Congress
