Switching to a reel mower - a first hand experience

Last spring I made the decision to replace my gas power mower with one of the

new reel (push) mowers. We know the reel mowers are environmentally friendly,

but are they a practical alternative? Here is a first hand, honest appraisal

after a season of use.

Healthy lawns, healthy lungs

" We shouldn't be spraying our lawns, just like we shouldn't be blowing smoke in

people's faces, " says Dr. June Irwin, one of the most outspoken members of the

Canadian medical profession on the subject of pesticides in urban areas.

Corn gluten - non-chemical, natural 'weed n feed' for lawns

Corn gluten meal products offer a non-toxic alternative to traditional,

chemical-based products for weed control in gardens and lawns. As a fertilizer,

corn gluten is 10% nitrogen by weight. As a weed suppressant, corn gluten acts

as a natural " pre-emergent " - it inhibits seed germination by drying out a seed

as soon as it cracks open to sprout.

Global Warming/Climate Change - what we can do about it

The threats associated with climate change will only diminish when each of us,

the grass roots of humanity, accept this reality and take steps to change. Here

are some suggestions for ways we can make a difference.

http://eartheasy.com/article_global_warming.htm

" Three-in-ten (31%) feel climate change is caused by the things people do,

almost one fifth (19%) feel it is caused mostly by natural causes; almost half

(49%) feel it is a combination of the two. " Time, ABC News, Stanford Univ. poll

(March 26)

" There will be no polar ice by 2060. " Larry Schweiger, president National

Wildlife Federation.
