According to the financial pages of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the move is due to a " structural oversupply " in the global aspartame markets, which has caused " worldwide strong price erosion over the last 5 years " . Perhaps recent renewed doubts over cancer causing properties and other side effects of the sweetener, which is used instead of sugar in a huge number of 'diet' foods and drinks, had something to do with the oversupply - Betty Martini, long time anti-aspartame campaigner, certainly thinks so.... ------ http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/sepp/2006/04/01/european_aspartame_manufacturer_\ quits.htm --
