Holland Sweetener Company, a joint venture between Dutch Royal

DSM and Japanese Tosoh Corporation has announced that it will

close its Aspartame manufacturing facility located in the

Netherlands. According to the financial pages of the

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the move is due to a

" structural oversupply " in the global aspartame markets, which

has caused " worldwide strong price erosion over the last 5

years " . Perhaps recent renewed doubts over cancer causing

properties and other side effects of the sweetener, which is

used instead of sugar in a huge number of 'diet' foods and

drinks, had something to do with the oversupply - Betty

Martini, long time anti-aspartame campaigner, certainly thinks

so....
