[POWA] A clarification of our numbers

Dear POWA Petition Signers,

 

You may have noticed that the numbers of signers on our Re-Examining

Fluoridation petition recently went steeply backwards. While it is

unfortunate that we have fewer signatures than we thought we did, this

is

neither an error nor an accident; it is a correction.

 

You may also have noticed that we were getting many duplicate

signatures,

sometimes even three at the same time! We also discovered that many

people who had previously signed, apparently did not remember that they

had, and signed again some months later.

 

Our programmer recently installed a program that flags the duplicates,

making it possible to find them all. We then did a big house cleaning

and

found and removed over 700 duplicates! The program protects the

signatures from being accidentally removed when we are working on them,

and we further took pains to be very careful in making decisions about

each and every precious signature and comment. (For instance,

sometimes

we even combined comments from the same person.) In addition, we put a

warning on the signature form itself to not press the submit button

more

than once.

 

As always, we are asking your help in inviting new people to sign, or

to

follow-up on others whom you have already asked. However, PLEASE do

NOT

RE-SIGN the petition yourself, and please try to guard against simply

sending the same message to the same people, who might simply re-sign.

It

will be easier for us to find and remove any future duplicates as they

happen, but we would like to avoid as much duplication as we can.

 

Sending a note to list serves you may be on would be very helpful!

That

way, one person can reach many at one time. We are anxious to pass

that

10,000 mark!
