Organic Farming

Second Green Revolution

By Daya Krishna

According to the Planning Commission, a second Green Revolution is in wait for

India. Organic farming is expected to be one of the focus areas to boost

agricultural growth during the period of Eleventh Plan (2007-12). Government is

considering establishing organic agricultural estates for small holders to

promote organic farming.

Organic farming is particularly suitable for the country. The use of

agro-chemicals are either very low or completely absent in the large parts of

India. Northern region, northern hills and the rain-fed areas can be easily

converted to organic farming.

The mid-term appraisal of the Tenth Plan (2002-07) has also emphasised the need

for promoting organic farming not only due to its high value export potential

but also because it encourages sustainable development of agriculture. It says

that properly managed organic farming not only eliminates water pollution but it

also helps in conserving water and soil, and, thus, enhancing sustainability.

The Planning Commission will be significantly increasing fund allocation to the

organic farming in the Eleventh Plan. Recently, an outlay of rupees 57 crore was

allocated for production, promotion, certification and market development of

organic farming in the Tenth Plan period (2002-07).

Organic food is costly. But it has started attracting health conscious people in

large numbers and a large number of retail stores are keeping organic food for

their high-end customers.
