William Rivers Pitt | Deranged, Disconnected, and Dangerous

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031706A.shtml

The man is deranged, disconnected, and dangerous. It appears, finally,

that a significant portion of the country now sees this clearly. Only

33% of Americans, according to the latest Pew poll, approve of Mr.

Bush and the job he is doing. Hey, it only took five years, writes

William Rivers Pitt.

US War Spending to Rise 44% to $9.8 Billion a Month

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031706B.shtml

US military spending in Iraq and Afghanistan will average 44 percent

more in the current fiscal year than in fiscal 2005, the nonpartisan

Congressional Research Service said. Spending will rise to $9.8

billion a month from the $6.8 billion a month the Pentagon said it

spent last year.

Elizabeth de la Vega | The NSA Spying Debate

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031706C.shtml

Elizabeth de la Vega analyzes the NSA warrantless surveillance scandal

and the " debate " that surrounds it. She suggests that the

administration has us trapped in an infinite loop, the equivalent of a

computer program from which there will never be an exit. It is the

White House's radical claim to unfettered commander-in-chief powers

that is the flaw in the system which must be corrected if we are ever

to exit the loop.

White House Civil Liberties Panel Finally Meets After 16 Months

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031706D.shtml

A White House civil liberties panel created more than a year ago to

monitor the effects on ordinary citizens of the war on terrorism took

its first significant action this week. It met.

NYPD Reports Detail Covert Anti-Protest Tactics

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031706E.shtml

In five internal reports made public yesterday as part of a lawsuit,

New York City police commanders candidly discuss how they had

successfully used " proactive arrests, " covert surveillance and

psychological tactics at political demonstrations in 2002, and

recommend that those approaches be employed at future gatherings.

Blair Joins the Growing Calls to Close Guantanamo

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031706F.shtml

Tony Blair joined the growing calls for the US detention camp at

Guantanamo Bay to be closed after he was questioned about the claims

of torture by two British residents held there.

Mullah Omar Promises Intensification of Afghan " Resistance "

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031706G.shtml

The Taliban leader promises " an oven on fire " for coalition troops in

Afghanistan.

Ali Dabbagh: " A New Model "

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031706H.shtml

Sometime advisor to Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, as well as an

important Shiite MP and one of the authors of the new Iraqi

Constitution, Ali Dabbagh claims in an interview with Le Monde that a

few MPs are working on a new model for the Iraqi state. It may not

seem new to everyone

Kurds Destroy Shrine in Rage at Leadership

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/031706I.shtml

For nearly two decades, Kurds have gathered peacefully in this

mountainous corner of northern Iraq to commemorate one of the blackest

days in their history. So it came as a shock when hundreds of

stone-throwing protesters took to the streets here Thursday on that

anniversary. The violence was the most serious popular challenge to

the political parties that have ruled Iraqi Kurdistan for the past 15

years.

VIDEO SPECIAL | Katrina Survivors: Don't Abandon Us

A Film by Chris Hume

http://www.truthout.org/multimedia.htm

On Tuesday, March 14th, Katrina survivors converged on Washington to

protest FEMA's eviction of those displaced by Katrina from their motel

there has been no extension or court order extending the program.

People once displaced by Katrina are now being displaced by our
