Guest guest
Hello everyone, Occasionally in my reading I come across things saying that some alternative treatment/etc, while poo-poo'd in the USA allopathic medical establishment, is taken seriously, actually used, and even (gasp!) researched seriously in Europe. For example, I've read that St. John's Wort and Glutamine are 2 things used in European hospitals and by European doctors, despite USA refusal to even consider them. Does anyone know if this is true -- that the European medical establishment is less likely to behave as stupidly as the USA medical establishment does? Guest guest
It is impossible to speak of a European medical establishment because Europe is many different countries, with many different languages, with many different cultures, with many medical traditions... You would have to look at each country separately and see what the attitude of the MDs is in that particular country. I can only speak about my own country (Belgium) and would say that 90-95% of MDs are unwilling to consider alternative treatments too. What kind of health care system do you have in Belgium? How does BigPharma affect it? Guest guest
Our health system is organized by the government and includes about everyone. BigPharma hasn't freedom here and as a result medication is much cheaper here - especially those that are prescribed by a MD. Guest guest
Germany is known for its support for Herbal Remedies and I understand they are available via doctors. The attitude is pro herbal. The UK has the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital which will also give out herbal remedies. Some hospitals support alt med provided the doctors are satisfied it will do nothing, other than help with mental problems ie massage, talking therapies, aromatherapy. For serious use of herbal remedies it is hard to find a hospital that is using it, other than the RLHH. The UK is a wash out when it comes to official hospital use of herbal med. There is some support for acupuncture, but only for pain relief. It is impossible to get the cancer hospitals to use alt med, especially the Royal Marsden.
