Guest guest
Dear Friends, Yesterday there was a critical examination of the Unani system of medicine and also an interview of Swami Ramdev on two very popular TV channels. The discussion on Unani brought to fore the fact that this system of medicine has much to offer to the coffers of healing. Despite objections raised against it, the Unani healers, backed by a spirited and informed audience revealed how all tests have been performed as per modern parameters which has found the system satisfactory. The results of these tests have also been published in the scientific journals of repute. All that stood between Unani and success is the need to inform the people and also to clear the misconceptions in the minds of the mainstream doctors. Dr Gulati of the MEMS tried to defend the stance of modern medicine vis a vis the holistic methods but unfortunately he was confronted by a knowledgeable audience which comprised of Health Ministry officials from the Central Council for Research in Unani. These agitated officials rebutted his claims with irrefutable facts, and a pensive Dr Gulati was forced to admit that all was not well with the present medical setup. He said that the government was lax in control. The programme coordinator opined in conclusion that patients must be self informed and choose the system of medicine that suits their taste. The days of blind faith are clearly over. Swami Ramdev appeared stoical and answered all the charges levelled against him with elan. He said his intention was not to cheat the people but to deliver them from those who preferred to mislead them for financial gains. He said he was not doing anything wrong by trying to collect Rs. 100 crores for a research institute and a base for developing yoga and ayurveda. He said this sum was very paltry compared to the Rs. 2,00,000 crores that went to the pockets of the mainstream medical setup. He said that while modern medicine admitted that all diseases stemmed from lack of mental control and the resultant stress, the mainstream medicos did nothing to rectify the situation. It was he who, through yoga and pranayama, was trying to purify the mind to stem the flow of diseases. The interviewer, Sri Prabhu Chawla, tried to look tough but was soon influenced by the frankness in the Swami's thoughts. These are happy days for all health activists who have been clamouring for decades to rectify the present reductionist form of treatment and usher in the era of holism. They have had to face unwarranted criticism, have been dubbed unscientific, impractical, have been isolated and subjected to very crude character assassination. The journey is not over yet but there is now light at the end of the long dark tunnel. There is hope. Regards, Jagannath.
