Veggie Chemical Repairs DNA Damage and Prevents Cancer

A chemical in vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage, as

well as another one found in soy, can increase DNA repair in cells.

This could prevent them from becoming cancerous.

Links have already been established between eating certain vegetables

and a reduction in cancer risk. These findings suggest a mechanism for

why that might be the case.

Vegetables such as broccoli contain a compound called I3C, and one

called genistein is present in soy beans.

These two chemicals increase the amount of BRCA proteins present in

cells. These proteins prevent damaged genetic material from being

passed from one generation of cells to the next.

Cancer cells typically contain low amounts of BRCA proteins, and

faulty BRCA signaling heightens one's risk of some cancers, including

prostate, breast and ovarian.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

The healthy reputation of broccoli, among other vegetables, as a

cancer fighter is growing by leaps and bounds, thanks to its ability

to jump-start the repair of DNA within cells.

One of the most efficient ways to obtain these benefits would be

through the use of broccoli sprouts. I first posted this use on my Web

site nearly eight years ago.

However, please understand that no vegetable or food is ideal for

everyone. Although the cancer-fighting ability is clearly profound and

effective, broccoli is not for everyone. I sincerely believe that most

of these benefits have some type of metabolic typing influence.

For instance, I am a very strong protein type and broccoli is clearly

not a protein vegetable. I really can't stand the taste of broccoli

and rarely have it. I tried broccoli sprouts when I first learned of

them eight years ago and really did not care for them at all.

At the time I did not know about metabolic typing so I never

understood this aversion to broccoli other than honor listening to my

body, so I don't consume them at all because for me they are not

right. For a carb type they would probably promote enormous levels of

improved health.

So, the end result is that you should listen to your body, not me or

any research scientist, and trust that God provided you with all the

tools you require to stay healthy.
