Guest guest
Book Review: Doctor Yourself: Natural Healing That Works! Andrew Saul, Ph.D. ISBN 1-59120-033-4 Dr. Saul’s book contains some brief introduction to firing your allopathic doctor (in most health-care issues) and taking care of yourself, but the bulk of the book breaks specific health problems into separate chapters and then gives their orthomolecular and/or naturopathic solutions, based on real life stories of friends and patients of Dr. Saul. The severity of topics included range from Alzheimer’s disease and fibromyalgia, to dealing with cuts, slivers and hiccups. I had previously looked over Dr. Saul’s DoctorYourself.com website, and found that the book and website contain a lot of the same information (in many cases, the EXACT information). In fact, since the website seems to offer everything the book does, and *more* (newsletters, for example), for those who have access to the internet I’m not sure what benefit there is to actually purchasing the book. The book (like the website) is very easy to read, containing very little jargon that would confuse the general reader. I did appreciate Dr. Saul’s easy manner and humor throughout the text. I’ve also begun to implement several of the remedies he suggests, and passed others along to friends and family who have other needs. One disappointment I had with the book was a lack of general health information – I’ve been wanting to understand my body and body systems holistically, rather than allopathically, and I had thought I’d find more of that information here in Dr. Saul’s book. The fact that it’s not there simply makes it like the rest of the books I’ve found so far: lots of specific-issue information split into different explanations, but little to nothing that helps the reader tie it all together and understand his or her body as a whole. Overall, I would recommend this book for those who do not already have access to his website, as I’m assuming that the website will be updated more often (simply due to the work and money in getting a new book printed whenever new information comes out). However, I would suggest checking the book out at the library, first, to make sure that the topics covered in the book actually match something you need help healing. For instance, if you need help with kidney stones, the information is there. But if you need help with acne, it’s not. So, save yourself some money, if what you need isn’t listed! Good luck! Guest guest
Dear Jent, I am glad that you liked his site and his book. I consider his site to be one in which I think that most people should read over and over. It and the book are designed to give the necessary information to people who do not have any biolodgical or medical background. He isn't trying to teach biology, physiology, or formal natural medicine. Although, I am sure that he could. He is trying to teach basic natural healthcare. I think that he does a terrific job of it too. It is a great book to read first before " going deeper " . Dr. Saul doesn't derive any personal profit from either the web site or the book. The web site is strictly non-commercial. And yes, most of what is in the book will also be on the site. He certainly isn't pushing the book, when he also gives the information away free on the site. I do hope that everyone buys his book though. He has been involved in many projects that supply free vitamins to children and families in need, prisoners, etc. He teaches free classes, etc. He is employed as a college professor. Outside of that, this guy gives about 1000 times anything that he gets, Between his site and his book, he reaches millions of people. All without personal profit to himself. He has been a great force to bring natural health to everyone. I consider his site to be the number one, most important site, on the web for natural health. The book (earlier versions) has been out for some time. In fact it precedes the web. I think that the first book came out in the 70's. I keep a current copy in my home natural-medicine chest for reference. I take the book while traveling in other countries, etc. I buy them ( they are cheap ) and give them away to people. I recommend that all members here, buy and keep his book. I ask you and all of the members here to lend support to Dr. Saul, on or off the web, in any way that you can. He has done more to bring natural health care to the people than anyone else. He is a great guy and has been doing great work, to benefit people, for a long time now. Thanks for the additional info, Frank! I agree - good causes deserve good money. His site is in the top 5, at least, of all I've seen so far. The book was also great (only limited, as I mentioned before, by publishing constraints). I will certainly be doing what I can towards helping out!
