Perhaps if we were to rewrite the famous words of Martin

Niemoller, instead of " First they came for the communists . . . " they

would read:

 

First they stole the elections and I didn't speak up because my

vote was not disenfranchised.

Then they illegally detained POWs in Guantanamo and I didn't speak

up because I wasn't one of the detainees.

Then they bombed innocent Iraqi children and I didn't speak up

because they weren't my children.

Then they tortured Iraqi prisoners and I didn't speak up because I

wasn't the one being tortured.

Then they illegally spied on my neighbors and I didn't speak up

because I felt I had nothing to hide.

Then they evicted the Katrina victims from the shelters and I

didn't speak up because I wasn't one of the evicted.

Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to

speak up for me.
