Hi there -

I'm writing this on behalf of a friend who's been experiencing some

chronic issues with his liver in the hopes that someone can offer

him some helpful suggestions. Below is his story. Please forward any

suggestions you may have.

Thank you!

I am a 41 years old male, currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the

Pennsylvania State University. I am seriously suffering of liver

disorders since October 1999. The numerous medical investigations

done until now have not been able to provide a clear diagnosis. I am

turning to you with the hope of getting some help.

The crisis started in the beginning of October 1999. I found myself

with terrible abdominal discomfort, pains, and high fever. I could

not sleep, and I was sweating horribly much in my bed and

immediately hospitalized on the basis the first blood and urine

tests ordered by Doctors. I was told that I had a kidney infection.

But after further analysis (X-Ray, upper abdominal ultrasound, CAT-

scan) doctors told me that the problem was rather with the liver. I

was treated with antibiotic for 5 days, but daily blood tests

indicated that infection parameters were worsening. Hepatitis A, B,

and C and malaria test were negative.Furthermore, new tests

including MRI and serology were performed. All the results were

negative. I felt very weak; I considerably lost weight and had skin

rash. Anyhow, a few days after the antibiotic treatments were

stopped, the infection parameters started falling gradually. My

condition started to improve and I was released from hospital after

one week. A month later, the same tests were done. My condition

improved somehow for a couple of months but I often suffered of

abdominal discomfort, tiredness, itching of the body, and pains in

the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. The symptoms aggravated

after eating food that contain meat, fish, or acid containing foods.

The same exams were made and the results and diagnosis were

similar: " Non-specified liver infections " . I was released after 3

days as the infection parameters improved. The general conditions

also improved but the severe pain in the upper right quadrant of the

abdomen remained and even worsened after eating. The symptoms are

aggravating with time. Foods that I was able to take couple of years

ago make me nowadays very seek upon eating. Even traces level of fat

make me ill for a week at least. I am living with a diet completely

devoid of meat, fish, oil, fruits (except bananas), and fresh

vegetables. But despite these restrictions, I am often very ill

unable to work properly. I rely on drinking about 7 liters of water

to bear the itching and the pains at the upper right quadrant of the

abdomen.

Recently, I have been going through various medical tests ordered by

my Doctors: Ultrasound, CAT-SCAN, and NM hepatobiliary tests,

endoscopy of the upper abdomen, but these tests have been

inconclusive. Here are some of the results of the CT SCAN In

December 2004:

" A 10 mm rounded area of increased enhancement is seen in the

anterior segment of the right lobe of the liver on the arterial

phase on image 5/19. This cannot be identified on the delayed

images. The appearance is consistent with a small hypervascular

lesion. This is probably benign and may represent focal nodular

hyperplasia. A follow-up CT examination in approximately three

months could help document stability " .

A follow-up CT scan and NM Hepatobiliary tests were done in June

2005. My Doctor told me that the results were normal. Blood tests

have also been conducted and they were said to be normal although

ALT, amylase, GFR, RBC, PH, UA, and MPHS were repeatedly considered

high. Here are selected values from tests in State College.

Up to now, my doctors seem not to know the real reasons of the

troubles I have, and my conditions is deteriorating. I feel weak,

constantly exhausted, have severe pains and itching, and I am unable

to work properly. Eating has become scaring to me when I think of

what I will experience after the meal. I feel the pains in the liver

like a wound with an inflammation. I am seriously suffering and

since I am still able to walk, people don't seem to understand how

serious my case is.

I now turn upon you to ask for your help and care in order receive

some treatments and get cured from this disease that prevents me

from a normal life.

I thank you in advance for your attention and look forward to

hearing from you.
