Hi Activists and Consumers,

I have taken the following material from Dr.Jonathan V.Wright's

newsletter Nutrition & Healing, January 2006. His website

www.wrightnewsletter.com

Patients with Type 1 Diabetes or Insulin Dependent Diabetes need to

supply the essential hormone insulin in order to digest foods

containing sugars and maintain a stable level of blood sugar.

Currently there are 4 kinds of hormones to replace insulin, Humulin

Ultralente or U, Lente or L, NPH and regular. The first 2 U and L are

to be discontinued by the manufacturer. These are the closest to

natural insulin and a combination of the two can be adapted to handle

the normal surge and flow of sugar and carbohydrate metabolism. But

the education and promotion of these more natural products has not

been a high priority of the manufacturing marketing operation. The

profit margin is not that good.

NPH, although bio-identical peaks in 4 to 5 hours and falls off to

minimum effectiveness in 6 to 10 hours. This is hard to match to

human eating patterns. The other option is " insulin analogs " , they are

synthetic and not bio-identical, they are more convenient for

patients, since they do not have to deal greater blood sugar

instability, but they do have long term health risks. Very little

research has been done on the long term risks of insulin analogs. It

does activate Insulin Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) which has been found to

increase risk of cancer, particularly breast cancer and prostate

cancer. But the analogs do have a higher profit potential. The

leading expert on Natural Diabetes Control is Dr.Richard K.

Bernstein,MD www.diabetes-solution.net

Dr.Bernstein has diabetes,Type 1 and learned to control it.

Please write and call Eli Lilly and ask that they at least keep

limited quantities of Humulin Ultralente-U and Lente-L on the market.

If they promoted it with educational materials for physicians the

limited market (estimated at 2% of the Diabetes patients or 40,000

people) would expand as this is the safest treatment. The government

allows pharmaceutical companies to charge higher prices in some

measure, because they make a product that may be essential to a

minority of the population. Eli Lilly should be able to afford this

cross subsidy of bio-identical Insulins.

Hi Arnold,

I have had problems 'reacting' to insulin the last few months,

especially NPH. My research, and i may very well be wrong, shows that

NPH is an analoge, not exactly mimiking human insulin either chemically

or in its timing and actions. No human insulin is intermediate term.

I just found out I was allergic to insulin, and on researching found the

brand I was using has 'metacresol' as part of the preparation. If you

are writing the company to complain, why not find out why something

generally used as a disinfectant, thermoset resin, wire coating solvent

and a pesticide in used in injected insulin?
