Opinion - News Analysis

Towards a greener and more just planet Klaus Toepfer It is time for

trade unions and environmentalists to forge closer ties. MORE THAN 25

Asian trade union trainers have been educated, under the auspices of the United

Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), about health, safety, and environmental

issues in the workplace. Trainers will use the knowledge they acquired to

further strengthen local capacity to address occupational health, safety, and

environmental issues. A major survey is under way to unravel the health and

environmental impacts of nickel mining and smelting on the Pacific island of New

Caledonia. Kindly read the entire article at;

http://www.hindu.com/2006/01/14/stories/2006011405311300.htm The article

goes on to show how environment groups are now tying up with unions. The workers

too have realised that industrial pollutants are them too. Let us hope this new

alignment will give a boost to the fight against poluutants.
