Guest guest
TOMATO HOPE FOR SMOKERS TOMATOES may help protect smokers against lung disease, researchers said yesterday. Scientists found that mixing tomato juice into drinking water prevented lab test mice contracting emphysema triggered by tobacco smoke. There are now plans to extend the test to humans suffering the disease. Experts discovered one strain of mice developed emphysema after being exposed to tobacco smoke for eight weeks. But there was no disease when the animals' water was mixed 50-50 with tomato juice. The juice contains the antioxidant lycopene, which helps stop groups of atoms called free radicals causing chemical damage. Kuniaki Seyama, of Juntendo School of Medicine in Tokyo, said: " We thought lycopene was a good candidate. Carotenoids are fat soluble and create yellow, orange or red colors in plants. Carotenoids are not made by humans. Lycopene is not found in high amounts in many plants. The greatest sources of lycopene in fresh fruits and vegetables are watermelon, tomato, red grapefruit and guava. Follow the link above for more.....
