exercise and illness

Hello,

I'm new to this group and hoping to find some advice regarding an ongoing

problem. Whenever I begin an exercise routine, I get sick (usually with a

cold). This has happened again recently. I began a 30 minute per day exercise

program, mostly aerobic with some stretching, and got sick with a cold three

days after I started it. I'm in my 30s, normal weight, and have no diseases. I

want/need to exercise regularly since I'm very sedentary on my job, and this is

getting frustrating! Thanks.

Hello!

 

A few things come to mind as possibles:

 

* Are you getting enough GOOD sleep? It's during sleep that your body is doing

most of its rebuilding. If you aren't sleeping enough or good enough, your body

may not be able to rejuvenate itself properly - and that may be taxing your

immune system.

 

* Are you trying to do too much too fast? In our culture, we think we should be

gung-ho from the start - but sometimes starting smaller actually gets us

farther, and healthier! When I started my program, I tried to start with 30

minutes a day, then had to drop to 20, then had to drop to 10 minutes a day and

stay there for a few weeks. Then I was able to work my way up to 30 minutes a

day. It's no shame to start where you need to start, since that's the only way

to get where you're going anyway!

 

* My adrenals and other body functions were so trashed that I was not able to

start my exercise with aerobics - which increase your adrenalin/etc. But when I

started with an easy non-aerobic weightlifting program, it got me going and

when everything else healed a bit I was able to start (small) aerobics (as

above).
