This piece has been torn apart so many times. I suppose it is my turn. We people of the United States of America, have religious freedom and many of our founding fathers practiced some form of Christianity, but not all did, and definitely no one group was large enough to make it the state religion, but the separation of church and state was essential as many of the people who came here were trying to escape religious persecution and we all needed to work together for a common cause. Many of our ancestors came here as the religious outcasts of Europe. We all had to agree to let others practice as they wished, not as any one group so dictated. Not all of our Revolutionaries or founding fathers spoke English, even as a second language, or those who fought in the revolutionary war. In fact one of the defining moments was when the German communities revolted. Without them we'd never have made it as a solidified military movement, as at that point in time there were over a dozen separate revolts happening, and individually we were getting our butts kicked. hence the basic idea of 'States and their rights'. Our founding Fathers spoke English, German, Gaelic of various sorts, French along with many other languages. Jefferson didn't practice Christianity. He played no small part in the drafting of our Constitution. Just as one example. Many of the Christian sects in this country had lived through persecution by other sects of Christianity in their home countries. More blood was spilt over people not being the Christian Religion of the King, than we spilt on trying to make other non Christian religions peoples behave as the Christian extremists wanted all Christians and non Christians alike to believe. The list goes on and on. It isn't your flag, it is our flag. I don't wrap myself in it, I fly it and defend it. If you have to enforce your religion on others, I suggest that you don't understand what our founding fathers meant and the numerous times that religious extremists have tried to enforce their limited views in this area, have failed every time in the last 100 years. God doesn't belong to just the Christians. No one in this Nation has to believe in God and no one in this Nation has the right to enforce a belief in there not being a God. I note from my Christian Bible studies that Christ was the son of God. He stated he wasn't God. I also note that he stated that all of us are the children of God. He didn't say, just those that believed in him, or just the children of Israel, he said everyone was. We... the people of this Nation, have the right to practice a religion of our choice, or not. If you feel that I have to agree with the leaders of this nation, then you don't want me to be an American in the footsteps of our founding fathers, you want me to be as those we opposed when we had our Revolution in the 1770's. If you follow your leaders no matter what they do, no matter the laws of the land, that is Fascism. If you follow and defend your country to the death, no matter what your leaders or country is illegally doing, right or wrong, that is Nationalism. If you defend your Constitution and Bill of Rights, if you take responsibility for your government, as it is OUR Government, as our Leaders are our Representatives, and if you hunt down and remove from office and arrest and try the law breakers, If you apply the laws of our land evenly and fairly as they are written, to all people, then you are a patriot. Rarely have I seen a person who proclaims to be a Patriot ever be more than one of the first two examples. Rarely have I seen someone that really was a patriot wrap themselves in OUR Flag, using it as a defensive shield against all questioners. The pledge of allegiance is a Twentieth century invention. Our founding fathers and the people of the USA didn't have one in the 18th and 19th Centuries. People are beginning to believe the revisionists, thinking it dates back to our Constitution, due to the way it is always associated in the same sentences and paragraphs as our Constitution. I am old enough to remember having to change my voluntary Pledge of Allegiance to a mandatory one that stated 'One Nation under God' so McCarthy wouldn't hunt us down as dirty rotten Commies. Damn if I want to be associate with that man and any extremist thing he forced on our nation, in his numerous violations of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, in his lust for absolute power over the people of the United States. I must say, I thoroughly agree with you on the last few lines, so I will repost them here; It is Time for America to Speak up If you agree -- pass this along; if you don't agree -- delete it! AMEN I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please! This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! " In God We Trust " is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan.. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women.......on Christian principles.....founded this nation..... and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home......... because God is part of our culture. If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so! But once you are done complaining....... whining...... and griping....... about our flag....... our pledge...... our national motto........or our way of life.... I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other Great American Freedom....... THE RIGHT TO LEAVE... It is Time for America to Speak up If you agree -- pass this along; if you don't agree -- delete it! AMEN I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please!
