Poll Shock: Off by 40 points,

newspaper's predictions may be disturbingly accurate

By ROBERT C. KOEHLER

November 24, 2005

One of the most wildly inaccurate

pre-election polls in memory, which was off by over

40 points on some predictions, may prove to be

deadly accurate as an indicator of the problems we face as a

nation with our voting process — and democracy itself.

But you won't learn this by reading the Columbus Dispatch,

the newspaper that conducted the poll just prior to Ohio's

Nov. 8 election. The paper's public affairs editor conceded

to me that the poll results the Dispatch wrote about,

wrongly indicating massive public support for several

proposed constitutional amendments, were, in essence,

the journalistic equivalent of the explosion

of the space shuttle Challenger.

" Much like the American space program, both our triumphs

and our shortcomings are out there for all to see, "

Darrel Rowland said in an e-mail. Unlike NASA, however,

which did manage to find that faulty O-ring,

the newspaper's powers that be don't seem particularly

interested in learning how their big public flop occurred.

" We'll certainly double-check the poll mechanics, " he said,

" but see no reason to discontinue a methodology

that's proven accurate for decades. "

And Rowland's right, as far as I can tell:

The Columbus Dispatch's survey of voters, conducted by mail,

has historically been a reliable poll; it has been cited

for its precision in the scholarly journal Public Opinion

Quarterly and is considered far more accurate than

telephone surveys. There is no faulty O-ring,

in other words; the methodology doesn't need changing.

And that's why there's a story here that must not be

allowed to vanish. The story is about how America votes,

and evidence that pandemic chaos and perhaps even

centrally orchestrated malfeasance are accompanying

the spread of electronic voting machines

to the nation's precincts.

We know there's cause to worry about the state

of our democracy because of the historical accuracy

of the Columbus Dispatch voter poll.

Of the five proposed amendments on the Ohio ballot,

only the first — a $2 billion state bond initiative

to promote high-tech industry — was not related

to the conduct of elections, and oddly enough

its results were accurately forecast in the poll

(predicted yes vote, 53 percent; final yes vote,

54 percent). Then it gets hairy.

Issue 2 would have made absentee voting easier in the state.

It had lots of high-profile support, and the Dispatch poll

predicted a cakewalk for it: 59 percent yes, 33 percent no, 9

percent undecided. The actual result: 36 percent yes,

a whopping 63 percent no.

Then there was issue 3, which would have lowered

the campaign-contribution limits that a lame-duck state

legislature had raised a year ago. Prediction:

61 percent yes, 25 percent no, 14 percent undecided.

Actual result: 33 percent yes, 66 percent no.

The results of issue 4, to control gerrymandering

by establishing an independent board to draw congressional

districts, were only slightly less dramatic.

Prediction: 31 percent yes, 45 percent no, 25% undecided.

Result: 30 percent yes, 69 percent no. And for issue 5,

to establish an independent board instead of

the secretary of state's office to oversee elections,

a 41 percent predicted yes vote shrank to 29 percent,

while the no vote ballooned from 43 to 70 percent.

Ka-boom goes the Challenger.

Here's the telling thing. The Dispatch, member in good standing of the

mainstream media, has no interest in raising doubts about the integrity of

the U.S. electoral system, and so hasn't looked in that direction for an

explanation of what voting-rights activist Bob Fitrakis called a polling

error of " Landon beats FDR " proportions.

Instead, the paper blames the notorious volatility of statewide referendum

issues. Rowland hypothesized " a huge shift in the electorate in the last

few days before the election, when the ads started peppering airwaves. "

Maybe, though Fitrakis maintains that the big pre-election ad blitz was

conducted by the losing side.

Why, I wonder, in a state that made a national spectacle of itself with

widespread irregularities and voter disenfranchisement a year ago, would

there be so little interest in investigating whether the " voting chaos "

reported by the Toledo Blade or the " night of surprises " reported by the

Dayton Daily News could have produced tainted results?

" One problem discovered Tuesday: Some machines began registering votes for

the wrong item when voters touched the screen correctly, " wrote Jim

Bebbington in the Daily News. " Those machines had lost their calibration

during shipping or installation and had to be recalibrated. "

But the spark won't jump in the media mind. You know: Hmm, we have

widespread confusion in the voting process, a recent GAO report that cites

many glaring insecurities in e-voting, and our own polls indicating big

victories that turn into big defeats. Could it be …? Nah! What are we

thinking? This is the world's greatest democracy.

Relax.

When Federal DECEPTION Becomes REALITY

It's hard to imagine the level of paranoia

that the federal government must be experiencing.

Between the insanity of badly orchestrated lies,

which precipitated our involvement in all the wars

in the Mid-East, bureaucratically induced environmentalism,

and now the " storm " induced military-turned-policed-nation,

including an executive-level suggestion that American people

quit driving, one senses that as lies continue to build

upon lies, danger ensues as dangerous people continue

to fall flat on their platforms of deceptive leadership

and pathological propaganda.

It is this writer's opinion that we are now led by abject

and career criminals, who also happen to be connected to a

network of global wealth siphoning systems and aristocrats.

America is witnessing pathological classism where the rich

are literally conquering everyone else. One mistake that we,

the people, have made for decades has been staying

riveted to " breaking news. " We tend to miss the real news

that is pre-empted, or in other words, not reported.

The only American news is this - the current administration

and their corporate backers are dismantling America.

The pace is furious. Every federal bureaucracy is being

remaneuvered for continued crisis, every federal bureaucracy.

Our government is so re-maneuvered that it is

unrecognizable as our government.

It is not our government.

We did not vote for our current rules, economic enslavements,

and regulations. Our current administration imposed them,

and we had no say whatsoever. Now, it is suggested that

our military (or someone's military) is to be given

policing powers in this nation, which is not our nation.

Only Congress has the power to act to protect the

American people from criminal leadership. Congress has had

ample opportunity, cause, and reason to act to protect us

from what is clearly back door wheeling and dealing,

but Congress happens to be full of paid

and complicit puppets of global profiteers

– full of " partners and stakeholders, " so to speak.

So the only question is what the many will do in response

to the criminality of the few – the criminals

and their military-style policing forces.

Any American citizen with half a brain cannot claim

ignorance, party affiliation, or loyalty to this nation's

leadership anymore. Anyone who does so is an enemy of freedom.

It's just that simple.

In today's world, every freedom loving American must

work on a daily basis, and I do mean a daily basis,

to expose the military take-over of America,

the bureaucratic confiscation of American land

(and most if not all other rights), the purposeful

destruction of the American public school system,

the crisis and war-based economic system,

and the insidious class war, which includes plans

for mass elimination of the poor, the huddled masses,

and the infirm. Social cleansing is in practice

and in full federal and global play.

The rich and their corporations are maneuvering humanity.

If in doubt, ask Africa. America is in a perpetual state

of deception. Our current state of reality is a highly

orchestrated deception. Our leadership is a group of goons

who lie for their livings and who loath and deny freedom

for the masses that they fear.

The rich have always been afraid of the masses because their

wealth has always been extracted from the masses in one way

or another. This is the global history of aristocracy

and it's constant paranoid scheming and brutality.

" Storms " are now the backbone of a plan to turn militaries

into national police forces. " Terrorism " is Plan B.

Yet storms and terrorism are orchestrated, instigated,

and reap billions into the hands of global corporations,

governmental research projects and programs,

and global partnerships and stakeholding prostitutes.

These are the economic policies and bureaucracies

of our American statesmen – America, the conquered

land mass and workforce, is their global agenda.

Our nation, as we though we knew it, is gone.

9-11 didn't cause America's demise.

Nor did naturally occurring hurricanes.

Our current administration and others before it

caused America's conquering and demise. They caused

the total destruction of our public education system,

as well, in order to ensure a stupid citizenry,

and then gave stupid citizens television to maintain

a steady potion of mesmerization.

The New Freedom Initiative will further ensure

chemical mesmerization – even of children.

Anyone who still understands or desires freedom

must now take to the streets and work every day to refuse

the power of global career criminals in Armani suits.

- They are our enemies.- They are the enemies -

of humankind's decency, compassion, and potential.

Any affluent American who believes in truth and freedom

is now mandated by morality to give his or her wealth

to serve in the fight to preserve truth and freedom.

We are each other's keepers, and we are vulnerable to false

and deviant sciences, scientists, and their financial backers.

We are fighting for our rights to be free from tyrants,

their militaries, their super viruses, and police forces.

Now we are all fighting dictatorship–the key word being " now. "

Unless you are prepared to claim that all Muslim people

are monsters, that America should be policed on the homeland

by armed forces, that no American citizen should own

private property; that the United Nations, annually,

can be handed millions of acres of American land

and watershed systems (Biosphere Reserves), while land trust

organizations buy up multi-millions of additional acres

using our tax dollars and donations, and then re-sell it

to our government and their partnership corporations,

and that American youth can be forced to die

for the monstrous profits of oil and reconstruction companies,

then you must act to reclaim truth, integrity, and freedom

from these white-collar oppressors. There are no options

minus the active acceptance of elite dictatorship.

It is time to take back our nation.

It is time for us to re-grow our backbones. And equally,

it is time for American churches to get out of the den

of thieves and quit dancing with financial devils

– all American churches, synagogues, and mosques.

If you are being led and leveraged by governments and

their missions, you are not houses of faith and spirit.

You are houses of idol worship and liars in the name

of a profit-reaping, bureaucratic/professional god.

The faithful do not partner with liars, gold diggers,

and thieves.
