Guest guest
My 83 year old dad was found to have microscopic hematuria from a routine urine test so the doctor had him take a urinary tract x-ray (they injected him with dye). They found that his left kidney is shriveled and non-functioning and his right kidney has cysts. The doctor said that if these cysts are fluid filled it's fine, but if they are fibrous it's a different story. He's scheduled for an ultrasound on 11/30. He has had no symptoms and would never have known about the cysts had they not found the blood in his urine. I know that my cat, whose kidney levels were not very good, has greatly improved with the help of kidney supplements that we've been giving her for a couple of years, so I'd like to find something(s) comparable for my father. I did read that vitamin B-6 is very good for the kidneys so I'll be getting him started on that. What else should he be taking? Thanks so much. Guest guest
Kidney cysts are very common. They are benign. The ultrasound is to essentially make sure the lesions on the other test WERE cysts and not a solid tumor that could be causing the microscopic hematuria. (ultrasound is very good at determining what is and what is not a cyst.) Usually, cysts have no effect on our kidney function, unless it is the relatively rare polycystic kidney disease. Therefore, I don't think you can make the analogy between your father and your cat. Your cat apparently has kidney function problems. Does your dad? Even if one of his kidneys isn't working, there may be no noticeable adverse effect. We generally have two to four times more kidney function than we need. , " csonsini1 " <csonsini@h...> wrote: > > My 83 year old dad was found to have microscopic hematuria from a > routine urine test so the doctor had him take a urinary tract x-ray > (they injected him with dye).
