Guest guest
WATER: When Adam's ale becomes a medicine We're not great supporters of the monstrous bureaucracy of the EU. In sweeping moves, it takes away individual freedoms, as we've seen happen with the sale of vitamins. But, just once in a while, it commits an own goal that almost makes up for it all. In Enews no. 200 you may have read that the UK government had granted greater powers to individual health authorities to introduce fluoride to the local water supply on health grounds. It appears that such an action is illegal under EU law (or Directive 2004/27/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 31 March 2004 amending Directive 2001/83/EC, since you ask). The reason to fluoridate our water is because it's supposed to do us good. Unfortunately, under EU law, that makes it a medicine - yes, public water is a medicine that must comply with regulations relating to the registration, licensing, sale and administration of medicines. The burden of proof therefore falls on the UK government to prove that fluoride, or silicofluorides, is beneficial to dental health, and specifically can prevent dental caries. And should the government try to present a good case, it may have quite a few eminent opponents to counter. People like Professor Vyvyan Howard, toxico-pathologist in the Centre for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Ulster. He says: " I am glad that there now appears to be a legal framework to test the dubious practice of mass medication via the water supply. There are so many unanswered questions relating to the addition of hexafluorosilicic acid to the water supply, particularly to the unborn and infants, that it is my personal and professional opinion that the practice should cease until the basic toxicological research required has been performed " . Oh dear. Mineral water, anyone? http://www.wddty.co.uk
