WHY IT IS SO POLITICALLY DIFFICULT TO SAVE MAN AND THE ENVIRONMENT?

NEVER has there been a worse, more gruesome, and planet wide

scientific agreement as to the horror of our imminent demise!!!

To name only a few of the international science institutions, who

have published the reports say: Due to the non-cyclicity of modern

linear developments and the erratic social evolutions; due to the

eradication of the rainforests, the asphyxiation of the atmosphere,

the death of the global ocean, extinction of most of the life forms,

including the mankind is as predictable as the orbital path of a

planet -- and as precisely as the timing of tomorrow's sunrise

Earth's life support system is disintegrating. The modern society is

literally undoing the work of organic evolution. The institutions we

have created are destroying the livability of the whole world.

Planet Earth stands on the cusp of disaster and people should no

longer take it for granted that their children and grandchildren will

survive in the environmentally degraded world of the 21st century.

This is not the doom-laden talk of green activists but the considered

opinion of 1,300 leading scientists from 95 countries who published a

detailed assessment of the state of the world at the start of the new

millennium.

Now only a few weeks back, I read (on this very group) the report of

a study by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), titled " Earth will expire

by 2050' that warns that the human race is plundering the planet at a

pace that outstrips its capacity to support life and that Earth's

population will be forced to colonize two planets within 50 years if

natural resources continue to be exploited at the current rate.

And the highly visible symptoms of these catastrophic environmental

disasters are wide and clear today. Just one among hundreds of

examples is the critical increase in global warming

The hurricanes that struck the Americas recently and were nicknamed

Katrina, Rita and the likes, must really be named global warming.

When the year began with a two-foot snowfall in Los Angeles, the

cause was global warming. When 124-mile-an-hour winds shut down

nuclear plants in Scandinavia and cut power to hundreds of thousands

of people in Ireland and the United Kingdom, the engine was global

warming. When a severe drought in the Midwest dropped water levels

in the Missouri River to their lowest on record earlier this summer,

the reason was global warming. In July, when the worst drought on

record triggered wildfires in Spain and Portugal and left water

levels in France at their lowest in 30 years, the explanation was

global warming. When a lethal heat wave in Arizona kept temperatures

above 110 degrees and killed more than 20 people in one week, the

culprit was global warming. And when the Indian city of Bombay

(Mumbai) received 37 inches of rain in one day -- killing hundreds of

people and disrupting the lives of 20 million others -- the villain

was global warming.

As the atmosphere warms, it generates longer droughts, more-intense

downpours, more-frequent heat waves, and more-severe storms.

Although Katrina began as a relatively small hurricane that glanced

off south Florida, it was supercharged with extraordinary intensity

by the relatively blistering sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of

Mexico. The consequences are as heartbreaking as they are terrifying.

Climate Prediction Study Warns of HIGHER Temperature Rises

Results from the world's largest climate prediction experiment have

suggested that greenhouse gases could cause global temperatures to

rise by more than double of previous forecasts.

A recent article in the UK & #30196; Independent newspaper states that Global

Warming has increased twice as fast as originally predicted. In the

article Myles Allen, of Oxford University, said: " The danger zone is

not something we're going to reach in the middle of the century;

we're in it now. Each of the hottest 15 years on record has been

since 1980

Global Warming is now a fact, and not even the watered-down Kyoto

Protocol, with its limited number of participating nations can save

the planet from environmental destruction.

The experiment, climateprediction.net, warned that average

temperatures could eventually rise by up to 11 degrees, even if

carbon dioxide levels were limited.

Scientists involved in the project believe that these levels could be

reached by the middle of the century, unless greenhouse gas emissions

are dramatically reduced.

David Stainforth, from Oxford University, Chief Scientist for

climateprediction.net, said: " Our experiment shows that increased

levels of greenhouse gases could have a much greater impact on

climate than previously thought. " Climateprediction.net project co

ordinator, Dr David Frame, warned that " the possibility of such high

responses has profound implications. If the real world response was

anywhere near the upper end of our range, even today's levels of

greenhouse gases could already be dangerously high. "

Funded by the Natural Environment Council and the Department of Trade

and Industry's e-Science programme, the collaborative project led by

Oxford University involves several UK universities and the Met

Office, and 95,000 people from 150 countries

worldwide.

Scientists at Oxford have urged more people to become involved. Mr

Stainforth, said: " Having found that these extreme responses are a

realistic possibility, we need people's support more than ever to pin

down the risk of such strong warming and understand its

regional impacts. "

There is substantial evidence that the survival of the Planet's

ability to sustain life is now threaten. Unless changes are urgently

made to protect the environment, human life faces extinction. It may

already be too late to prevent disaster, as the following article

explains.

This article does not reproduce the well documented evidence on the

destruction of the global environment, but rather put forward what

must be done if the planet is going to sustain life.

WHY IT IS SO POLITICALLY DIFFICULT TO SAVE MAN AND THE ENVIRONMENT?

Unfortunately, very few people in the world know the real cause of

these hurricanes and other environmental disasters, because the

market-industrial establishment, especially, the coal and oil

industries, having spent millions of dollars to keep the public in

doubt about these issues.

The reason is simple. For example, in the case of coal and oil

industries, to allow the climate to stabilize requires humanity to

cut its use of coal and oil by 70 percent. That, of

course, threatens the survival of one of the largest commercial

enterprises in history.

In 1995, public utility hearings in Minnesota found that the coal

industry had paid more than $1 million to four scientists who were

public dissenters on global warming. And ExxonMobil has spent more

than $13 million since 1998 on an anti-global warming public

relations and lobbying campaigns.

As the pace of climate change accelerates, many researchers fear we

have already entered a period of irreversible runaway climate change.

Against this background, the ignorance of the public about global

warming stands out as an indictment of the global media. When the

dominant global press has bothered to cover the subject of global

warming, it has focused almost exclusively on its political and

diplomatic aspects and not on what the warming is doing to our

agriculture, water supplies, plant and animal life, public health,

and weather.

For years, the fossil fuel industry has lobbied the media to accord

the same weight to a handful of global warming skeptics that it

accords the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate

Change -- more than 2,000 scientists from 100 countries reporting to

the United Nations.

Today, with the science having become even more robust -- and the

impacts as visible as the megastorm that covered much of the Gulf of

Mexico -- the press bears a share of the guilt for our self-induced

destruction with the oil and coal industries.

Reality to boomerang on the Culprits

Adolf Hitler was only spelling the beans of his `success' when he

said: " The victor will never be asked if he ever told the truth! " .

And we only know how truth cracked on the head of Hitler, the

greatest falsifier of truth in history

Truth is the greatest weapon against the society that is built upon

untruth. Modern society fears truth the most because it is built

upon the greatest myth and untruth, namely, the modern machination,

which has been proving, of lately, as the illegitimate child born out

of the unholy mix of modern science and modern market systems.

Now let us ponder over certain vital truths and realities that are

slowly coming into the open recently. And they now come into the open

as a result of super saturation and the degeneration of the present

modern society that is filled with falsehood, foolery, frauds etc.

for a long time. And more interesting is the desperate attempt of the

present leadership to deny or camouflage these inconvenient truths in

their popular exercise called `crises management'.

By the way, the recent incidents of environmental disasters that I

have quoted above, are just some of the hundreds similar reported

(among many more unreported) developments of imminent catastrophes,

coming in mainstream newspapers and other mass media recently.

As expected, modern market economy leadership is now advancing

certain new hypotheses on the false credibility of modern science and

scientists, particularly those science and scientists that are more

ecology and environment conscious.

But how can a society that is exclusively built upon science and

market economy suddenly discredit science and scientists alone?

Now I expect the esteemed thinkers and members here to ponder over

it. We have to identify the real culprits who stand in our way of

some effective remedial measures. And we have to do it on a war

footing before these catastrophic vitiations crack on the whole

society and which can prove to be suicidal for the whole mankind—as a

species. The culprits here, I think, are not any human forces, but

certain evil market-mechanical forces—call them certain trends,

practices—that can be cured in a very non-violent way, without firing

any shot

And this method is through what I can call modern man's readiness for

a CHANGE OF MIND, which exactly is what we are doing here. And we are

doing it as the last SURVIVAL INSTINCT of man.

M.J.John
