Guest guest
Tue, 25 Oct 2005 07:09:34 +0200 Alice in Wonderland: The World As It Is Today S Alice in Wonderland: The World As It Is Today Sam Hamod October 19, 2005 I remember reading ALICE IN WONDERLAND and thinking, how in the world did that world become so upside down. But guess what, we're in an Alice in Wonderland world right now. G W Bush says things are better in Iraq; yet, more of our troops and more Iraqi civilians are being killed everyday and there is no safe place for any American or foreigner except in the Green Zone. Bush says the economy is strong and good; yet, there is more unemployment, more homeless, more Americans without health insurance, the cost of living is startling ( at this point, real inflation for a householder and a person living in America, is about 25%, not the small amount the government mentions - if you look at the alarming cost of fuel for autos, for heating and cooling and the real cost of foods at the supermarket!) and the dollar is continuing to slide in the world's money markets (remember Henry Kissinger when you think of the floating currencies - he pushed for that when the dollar was the only strong currency in the world - but now the worm has turned). Bush says he is pushing for " democracy " in the world; yet, he keeps supporting dictators in Asia, Africa, in Latin and Central America. and is still trying to overthrow Chavez of Venezuela, and anyone else who speaks up against his power grabs. His talk of " democracy " in Iraq is a joke to most of the world because he has put in a puppet government, sent in agents and voting machines to guarantee that he will keep a hold on the " government " of Iraq. I Bush pushed for a " clean air act " ; yet, the truth is, his " clean air act " was nothing but a fraud that allowed more pollution than ever in recent American history, with few penalties for the polluters. The same can be said for his " clean water " bills, etc. The titles are great, but the substance contradicts the titles of his policies. Bush talks about compromise and unity in our government; yet, he runs over the opposition and proposes candidates for judgeships who are unqualified for those positions, see Ms. Miers if you doubt this ( a crony, not a legal scholar nor a judge - but he has her up for the Supreme Court; she is not qualified to even be on an appellate court). Yes, Alice, we understand your dismay now that we are living in this upside down world where black is white and white is black and if you question the leaders, then you are being ignorant, unpatriotic and above all - you could be arrested, or in some cases, just simply assassinated so that you don't cause any more trouble. You could also be like Jose Padilla, locked up without charges, not allowed legal representation and kept in solitary confinement as a threat to the nation - without ever being told what you did wrong or any real probative evidence being put forth against you. As to Democracy - maybe a little is left, but not much- and I fear less will be around much longer with Bush's Supreme Court and his appellate judges. Alice, what shall we do? ----------- Dr. Sam Hamod writes on world affairs for a variety of sites, is the former editor of 3rd World News in Wash, DC, and edits, www.todaysalternativenews.com Dr. Hamod says he is a 'conservative' because he wants to conserve our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, or Civil Rights, our Freedom of Speech, our Legal System and our air and water.
