Guest guest
I don't think this explains why my mail was held up for a week and a half..but it could have something to do with it. == Dan W. (Gmail) 10/20/05 23:54:24 Lately I have been fielding a truck-load of questions and doing tech support for people snatching themselves bald-headed over recent disruptions, outages, duplicate emails, and general slowness with their email and internet connections. Here is what is going on. This information comes directly from the companies themselves as well as from tech journals/magazines and newsletters. Please feel free to share this with your friends, family, and other groups. First and foremost... Here in the US there are 2 major internet backbone companies who are feuding and refusing content from each other. Essentially an internet backbone company is where individual internet service providers get their connectivity and what allows computers to communicate across vast networks around the world. Depending on which side of the battle lines you are on here in the US depends on what web pages and web services you will have available to you because if your internet connection has to pass through the opposing backbone company... you will not have access to the web site and mail may be returned to you. Secondly... , Gmail, AOL, MSN, and Fotki and many others (but these ones for sure) are having sweeping changes and doing major updates to their servers and software. They project that there will be glitches, slowness, disruptions, and outages throughout the month of October and possibly into the first week of November now. Verizon.net and MSN have already asked for a 6 month extension to become compliant with new sweeping changes intended to beef up security with regards to viruses and anti-spam and other assorted updates. Third... Keep in mind the devastation in the southern states of the US. Thanks to the hurricanes and tornadoes this year... a lot of damage has been done throughout the south and a lot of services have yet to be repaired or brought back online. Lastly... MSN is also down-sizing and there are talks of them merging with either AOL or in order to become more competitive against Google which is putting a serious hurting on all 3 companies. Also AOL has just recently fired about 700 of their employees and gave 350 of them the boot from the Florida call center... which is either closed or going to close. And it goes without saying that fewer employees doing customer care means poorer service and longer waits. It is because of all of these issues combined that we are ALL experiencing computer weirdness and why nearly everyone world wide is having problems with their email delivery and receiving their mail. And you may be wondering why when you call for tech support that the service is so incredibly poor and the hold time seems to get longer and longer... it is because many customer service call centers across the country are now out-sourcing their customer care to India, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Mexico, South America and etc... so just because you call the number for the service center in your area, does not mean you are going to be speaking to someone who is even in this country let alone fluent in English! I used to be a call center project manager, so I am speaking from first hand knowledge of this out-sourcing... companies are doing it due to budget cut backs and because foreign labor is cheaper. Even my own ISP has done this... when I call the 1-800 number to speak to customer service in Pittsburgh, PA... my call is routed to somewhere either in India or China! Thank goodness it is toll free! PS: Also, keep in mind that even once this stuff finally settles down (hopefully sometime no later than mid-November) the Christmas holiday season will be upon us. Which in the cyber culture equates to a bad revision of the Wizard Of OZ... hackers, and spammers, and viruses... OH MY!! The holiday season is online attackers favorite and most busy time of year. The more internet traffic increases the better they like it cause that means all the more trouble they can create. So, internet junkies beware... make sure that you have your PC's fully protected with the most up to date protection programs available and remember to scan often.
