Hello everyone…as I am new to your list I want to introduce myself.

My name is Barb, I am retired and my home is in Alaska, where I have

lived with my super husband since 1966. My enduring interests are

natural/alternative health care and nutrition. This led me to study

for a certificate in Herbalism, which I received several years ago

after 18 months of home study courses with the Australasian College

of Herbal Studies.

This choice of life care morphs naturally (no pun intended) over into

my long-lived involvement (read obsession!) with dogs. For almost 20

years, I bred, raised, and trained Siberian Huskies and Alaskan

Huskies. However, when I retired in 1989, and because of my husbands

up-coming retirement, I sold out my kennel to allow us freedom to

travel, which we have done quite a bit of in the last 14 years,

mainly in a motor home. Well, there was life after dogs ;-), but

life without dogs just had something missing!! So, I now have just

one (and it's hard to have just one !!), a lovely American Brittany

named Cassie whom I got at 7 weeks and is now just over 6 years old.

With so much happening in the world of alternative health care, and

the rather over-whelming amount of nutritional information rolling in

like a tidal wave, I felt the need to get communicating with folks of

like beliefs...sometimes it is just better, and more fun, to " talk "

with a discussion group than just do the research!! And of course,

another persons " take " on something is always valuable, in one way or

another...just that much more information to help with health and

nutrition decisions. So, I am looking forward to listening in,

probably lurking for awhile, and then hopefully joining in on your

dialogues.

" See " you online.....

My head kept turning back and forth between the 12 gauge and the dogs. The

12 gauge and the dogs. The 12 gauge and the dogs.

I gave myself a few minutes to calm down, gave them the whooping of their

life and cleaned up all the dead bodies. Some might say " oh no, you punished

your dogs! " They KNEW BETTER. As soon as I went outside, before I discovered

what they'd done, they tucked their heads and tails and RAN.

That was my clue to see what they'd been up to.

ONE lived, I named him Lucky, he lives in my room in a box. I'm not sure if

he's going to pull through or not. Poor little guy was trapped under a pile

of his dead brothers, the only reason they didn't kill him.

You're right, they were playing. They just killed them all and then walked

away. They didn't eat any of them.

Yes, we'll get more.

The problem is; my husband expects me to be the man around here. I've tried getting him to pound some fence posts in so I can get a nice fence up around the chicken coup but he hasn't done squat.

I've asked him to mend the hole in the shed but he hasnt' done squat. Fix the roof so it's dryer in there. Hasn't done squat. He always says "well, why dont' YOU do it?" There are just some things men are more suited to do JMHO. I don't weigh a whole lot and don't think I could pound a fence post in even if I threw all my weight into it.

I hadn't been home all day and the dogs must have spent the entire day chewing away at the shed. This is what it looked like when I got home:

The person who lived here before had a door they'd patched up. The dogs ripped that all off and then some! I was letting them run free when I wasn't home since we have 5 acres and the neighbors are quite far away but not anymore! Those little %$#*s are getting choke chains.

I've tried using regular chains to keep em put but they always squirm their way out of their collars no matter how tight I put them. NO MORE FREE REIGN FOR THESE PUPS!!!!

Oh goodness, you got some wild ones there Candace! And they are chewers, for sure!!

For getting a fence up and the shed mended, is it an option to hire a local guy/handyman to do it? It'll either prod your husband into action because it will wound his pride to see someone else doing his chores, or worst case, you'll have the "rent a husband" get it done!! LOL!!

Funny you should say that....I have been thinking lately about hiring his friend Andy to do a few things around here. Now all the manly things are being done by either me or my brother when I can lure him out here.

I threatened to get Andy to do some things about a year ago and he got majorly PEEVED and yelled at me. Said no way in hell was Andy gonna do it when he could do it for free. The thing I was threatening about that time I ended up doing, took me forever. I am now skilled with a crowbar and hammer!

I should put an ad in the paper for a "rent a husband" LOL

P.S. Yes, they are definately wild ones apparently when I'm not home! It's a lab and a golden retriever. They're so mild when I'm around.

Well, I think this is all a matter of priorities - your husband's and yours! :) Putting up a fence and doing some shed mending is obviously not high enough on his priority list. It's high on yours, but then there's the ability and time factor. Some problems just need to have money thrown at them (and a strong rent-a-husband! LOL!!!). I'm not trying to create marital dischord here, so maybe you and your husband can work out an agreement - if he can't do it within the next month (or whatever seems reasonable) then you have to resort to hiring someone. Anyway, just a suggestion! :)

My dad lived in the house I grew up in for 22 years. For that entire time, he turned the hot water on in his shower with a pair of vice grips. He wasn't going to PAY someone to fix the knob when he knew he could do it himself "easier and cheaper"! Well, when he sold the house he did end up paying someone else to do it. Crazy, huh! LOL!!

Growing up watching that kind of stuff made me very intolerant of it. If I can do it myself, I'll do it. If I can't, I'll pay someone else to. No hesitation! LOL!!

I have to agree with you. I have a big problem with people who have dogs in the wrong setting. You know, like people who don't have enough land for a dog to do anything except sh*t and bark. I have a term for the dogs that are too small to do anything, "ratwilers". IMHO dogs do not belong in the city and should not be domesticated unless they SERVE A PURPOSE. Seeing-eye dogs, working dogs, guard dogs, dogs that keep coyotes away etc. other than that they don't belong in the house or around kids (or chicks). Country dogs are another matter. They are not such a danger because they actually get the chance to be a dog.

Do I need to mention dogs with sweaters?

I went in 1980 and really did what i was supposed to do including

tough love.... it took a lot of very bad turns, but i was able to

cope with the bad and in late 1981 the subject finally bottomed out

and sobered up through AA and is still on the wagon and a good

companion. 23 yrs!!

I used to blame everything on him.. the throw rug in the hall used

to creep up the wall... i blamed it on him.. of course it was caused

by the friction of the rug against the carpet, but i blamed it on

him.. at least figured he could straighten it out once in a while!!!

I know this is a silly example, but that is just how we get until we

learn where to focus our energies and realize the only person we can

control is ourselves, and that we are not responsible for anyones

actions but our own..

I hope you call your Alanon group...Love.. granny lee
