Hello All! I am Kelly, new to this board. This board was

recommended to me from another list so I hope to educate myself and

learn a lot from all of you.

I have recently (within 3 days) made the switch from Zoloft, rx for

depression, to St. John's Wort (two daily). I was put on Zoloft for

post partum depression about four years ago and have been unable to

wean myself for years due to harsh side effects.

The transition has been relatively smooth thus far.

My question is this - will St. JOhn's wort eventually " wear off "

with the need for more?

Second question - before going on Zoloft I took St. John's Wort and

Kava, but when I asked my health food store (GNC) for Kava, they

said due to safety reasons they no longer sell Kava (??). Can I

still get Kava and is there now a great risk that I am unaware of?

Anyway, sorry so long winded. Glad to be here. :)

Kelly

Hi Kelly! I'm another Kelli! I haven't seen another on the list, but maybe there are more lurking. Anyway, welcome!

Congrats on getting off the psych drugs! Very well done!

I don't have any specific info for you on the St John's Wort or Kava, sorry, but I wanted to suggest some other things to help boost your system while you're in this transition - Total Nutrition (info in the files- great vitamin/mineral supplement!), Vitamin B1 (medications strip B1 from your body, you need to replenish) and Zinc (deficiency in Zinc has been related to post-partum depression).

Welcome to the group! :)

Thank you Kelli! I do appreciate the info. I had no idea about the B1. I am taking additional b6, as I have heard this will help with mood boosting.

Thank you for the welcome!

Something else that is helpful is L-Tryptophan. I have always found

that the more easily-found form, 5-HTP, is very hard on my stomach

(hurts like hell). I prefer to take real L-Tryptophan. If you can't

find it, let me know and I can tell you the manufacturer of the brand

I purchase.

Tryptophan is wonderful. The book that changed my life " Prescriptions

for Nutritional Healing " mentions that the main 3 neurotransmitters

(brain chemicals) responsible for mood are influenced by the intake

of protein and tryptophan. Serotonin is elevated by tryptophan

consumption but the other two need protein. The best way that I've

found to maintain my neurotransmitters is to consume turkey or salmon

(I love salmon, but turkey is a great alternative for ppl who don't

do fish :) ) because both have high levels of protein AND tryptophan.

That's the biggest thing. Another thing I do is consume a B-complex

tablet every day, because I've heard (from the same book) that B

vitamins function best when taken together. Vitamin B5 is GREAT for

stress. It's " the " anti-stress vitamin, says my research. And last

but not least, I AVOID refined sugar, at all costs. (I understand

there are sugars in honey, fruit, and more natural forms of sugar

cane, etc, but I somehow don't have the reaction to them that I do

with refined sugar.) Sugar DEPLETES neurotransmitters, from what I

gather. (If any of this is wrong or inaccurate, PLZ let me know; this

is the consensus I reached when I researched my own depression and

the remedies have worked very well for me.) St. John's wort is great

for me when my anxiety levels are high, I have PMS, or if I'm

incessantly worrying about something or going in mental circles. If

I'm angry and pissed off, Valerian root is my best friend. If my

adrenaline is up there from lots of stress, I have taken Kava Kava

without problems, but one must not use kava carelessly. Wort and

Valerian are pretty safe, tho. (And don't take TOO much Vitamin B,

says the Nutritional Healing book, for overdose my cause nerve

damage. But I imagine that'd take a lot. :) )

Hope that helps. :)

:D Here's the source of the L-Tryptophan:

L-Tryptophan

BIOS Biochemicals Corp.

Veterinary Division

Mesa, AZ 85203

Tel. (800) 404-8185

http://www.biochemicals.com

I have spoken when their president and their main chemist on the

phone. The dosage is 1 pill (500 mg) per 50 lbs. of body weight (or

less if you want to take less). It should not be taken near the

ingestion of protein (especially milk protein), because these

proteins will compete with the L-Tryptophan in getting across the

brain blood barrier, so you won't get as much out of it. Instead,

wait 1/2-hour after taking the L-Tryptophan before eating protein,

and wait at least 2 hours after eating protein to take L-Tryptophan.

Taking it with some carbohydrates (such as fruit) will improve its

absorption.

Most people take it at bedtime. I've been using this product for

several years now.
