Guest guest
My kids learned to read by being read to and following along. If I wasn't doing it they had cassette tapes and books to go with them. I'd read a book once and record it and they'd have those as well as commercial recordings. When reading I'd always watch for comprehension. If the child stopped being strongly interested I would go back and find the word he/she didn't understand and explain it. One day I was going to teach the younger (age 3) how to write her name and she informed me that her brother had taught her that 'a long time ago' and demonstrated. I taught colors by having multiple colored cups and asking which color they wanted, at first listing and showing. They both caught on quick. I finally figured out to put the dishes in the lower shelves and pots up top. That way it was easy for the kids to set the table without help or even being told.
