Guest guest
Alon, With my herbal formulas for my patients I usually use on average 5 herbs in a herbal tonic. My detox tonic has around 10 because I cover various organs on the body plus the symptoms that mybe experience through a detox (I had covered a fairly thorough base on these). In college they told us to average it out on 5 as then it can be more controllable if a patient responds or becomes allergic to a herb, we can eliminate that one without affecting the overall use of the prescription. Plus too many herbs in a mix can end up not working as well as a small amount of herbs in a mix. Plus we work on a dosage system per 200ml bottle and sometimes 4-5 is about the amount that can be given in one prescription. Wendy Dear Friends, I would like to pose a question for all those who build formulas for themselves or others. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using 7-10 herbs in a formula as opposed to concentrating on just 2-4 herbs? Which way do people prefer and why? Guest guest
Dear Wendy, Sheesh! I don't mean to sound tooooooo critical here, but what college did you go to??? Bastyr??? There is no set number of herbs to use in a particular formula, and trying to "standardize" herbal preparations is defeating the purpose of natural healing. If you want to create a great Liver Tincture, check an herbal and find out which herbs are great for the Liver and use those. If one of those herbs stands out as being specific, then double or triple up on that. For the Liver, you want to ensure you have plenty of Milk Thistle. For the heart, at least half your formula should be Hawthorne, etc. etc. etc. Being allergic to herbs is one of the greatest scams going around at the moment. If I hear one more time that someone is allergic to Garlic, I think I'll scream. Check the message archives on this as it has been covered in great depth before. When I find that someone is "allergic" to an herb, I jump for joy as I now know that I have a tool (that particular herb) which can act as a trigger to completely blow a condition if used correctly and in smaller quantities. As far as quantities of different herbs is concerned, one of the best remedies out there is Old Doc Christopher's 17 herb tea. I don't know why it works so well for the Liver and the Kidneys with all those herbs in there, but it does. Remember we're not talking rocket science here. People place way too much significance on natural healing, and try to make it more complicated than it really is. It is truly simple. Really it is. The best rule of thumb for dosages is the 150 Rule (in the files). I've never seen anything that beats this one. You also use the word "prescription" twice in the last part of your comm which is a Medico / Pharmaceutical term. I'm sorry hon, but your entire comm comes across as a "Medical Doctor Wannabee" in my books, and your data is not good and comes across very much as "pretended" knowledge. There is nothing esoteric or dangerous about natural healing. Nothing. Are you sure you didn't go to Southwest, or Bastyr???
