> Candace,> what are you currently feeding them your cats>? If its canned food try gradually adding teeny amounts of raw poultry in the can. I generally just take away the old, fast them for at least 12 hours and then give it to them. If they don't eat it within 20 minutes, pick it up, put it back in the refrig and offer it again later. You are top cat, don't let them rule you. They won't starve and they will eat it if that is the only thing that is offered. It's like feeding your children, if they keep holding out for junk and you give in................... anyway, they won't starve and they will eat it, you just need to be strong enough to allow the change to happen.> > Bonnie Rogers

Believe it or not...I learned to feed my dog a better healthier diet before I ever decided to do it myself...lol. Terrible how we put them before us!! Just like our children! But unfortunately in this case...I even put the dog before my child! ACK!!

That's true, I'm constantly trying to find ways to feed my toddler healthier and should probably focus on myself a little more.

P.S. I heard giving dogs raw meat will turn them wild and they'll eat your chickens and other pets. Anyone know if this is a rumor?

**********************************************

This can happen it really depends on the dog. I grew up on a farm and we had dogs that would not bother any of the other animals and then over the years we had a few that would not stop killing so we had to get rid of them. Our animals would get raw meat sometimes and other times dog food.

Each dog has his own disposition and this also depends on the breed... If they are bird dogs you could be in trouble!

Candice this is probably the problem. Most commercial cat food out there, and especially what you can find in the supermarket is basically grain and by-products (and the by-products are mostly 4D food - that is dead, diseased, dying or disabled), they are preserved with chemicals such as BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin which are all known carcinogens. Our animals are not supposed to eat out of a bag, they are suppposed to kill to eat, so if your cat is an outside cat and eats mice, well that's terrific, even though you may not think so. Start giving her some raw meat and some veggies if she'll take it. the meat is really terrific for them.

Hope this helps.

I have two indoor cats. I'm sure they kill a mouse every now and then, but mostly they eat cat food. I share chicken with them if I'm eating it and sometimes tuna. Cats will eat vegatables, huh? I don't see mine eating them, they're so picky. Tuna and chicken are about the only things I can get them to eat. What kind of veggies?

I have wheat grass growing in my window....should say HAD because the cats eat it so I just leave it there for them now.

I have a lab and a retriever. They're pretty mellow, but they chew everything to pieces and almost killed my cat when it got out of the house.

I wonder if it's a puppy thing or if they are going to kill my chics when they're old enough to go outside.

Candace,

I had a cat who would fight you for green beans and peas. He went nuts whenever I got the green beans out until I gave him one. He would growl the whole time eating it to keep the other cats away from him. It was pretty hilarious. Unfortunately he got old and sick and died on me.

The funny thing though...he was a beautiful black cat...and I got another little black cat who was only 3 weeks old when I got him...and he adores green beans as well. He also eats grapes. He and one of my other cats could go on raw without any problems...I think...but the other two...I would have problems with. The only issue I have is that my dogs will eat the cat food and the cats will never get to eat. I have to figure out a way to try this out on them but to separate the dogs and cats long enough to make the cats eat! lol

Candace.

first of all giving raw meat to dogs will not make them wild nor will they eat your chickens or your pets............start slow with the cats with veggies. try a few alflafa sprouts with them mixed with some meat or a small amount of other veggies that you are eating mixed with their meat. They are however getting veggies on their own if they are eating the wheat grass, its terrific for them.

Enjoy your weekdn.

I do know that my Golden has eaten chicken and beef raw but has never killed an animal yet. She has caught 1 morning Dove, 1 Chicken and 1 rat. She will not kill them but will bring them to me. So I don't think that it's totally true. Plus herding dogs usually are fed whatever they are herding. They do not go out and kill it. IF you get your puppies around the babies at an early age I think it deters them from the killing instinct.

I had about 25 chicks in my house doing a school project and my dog just licked them clean and we put them all over and under her for about a week trying to see what her reaction would be. Now she doesn't kill anything at all.

An old remedy for teething pups is to take a rag, run it under hot water, then immediately wring it out and put it in the freezer. After about 20-30 minutes take it out and give it to the pup. He/she should chew it until it is once again thawed out. this does 2 things:

1. gives them something to chew

2. numbs their gums so that the new teeth coming in don't bother so much.

Hi Candace, I'm not an expert here by any means, but what I'm doing with our 1 yr old black lab is to teach her not to run after other animals. She's really just interested in our 3 cats (sniffs the one that comes in the house and wants to play) but it turns dangerous when the cats get scared and run, then the dog chases. Then of course, once you've chased something and caught it, you have to do something with it, right!? So we're trying to teach her to just stay and watch the other animals. Keeps us from getting our arms yanked off when we take her to the park as well (other dogs and squirrels).

Caroline, I love that! Someone else with a cat that eats weird things! My cat, Groucho, is 17 yrs old and some of his favorite foods include pistachio nuts and potato chips! (Both of which he doesn't really get anymore as they are "contraband" in our house now!)

Just curious.......are they eating your living chickens now ?

personally I think that is farse. If a cat/dog is starving and

there are chickens around they'd be stupid not to kill. If they are

being fed something they didn't kill than how would they no. They

presumably weren't wild when you got your/the animals so they were

taought to seek prey.

My male dog does this with my cats...I have four cats and he thinks he is their daddy. He grooms them all the time. One of the cats...my youngest...he actually puts himself in front of him with the attitude of "love me".

I have fed my dogs raw and never had any problems with them doing anything to the cats. You have to teach them to be gentle. Let them know that you are the boss and that you will not allow them to hurt the baby chicks. You can tell your dogs a lot with body language. When my little girl dog...who weighs 13 lbs...but thinks she is 10 feet tall gets high on her horse...we have these little talks to bring her back down to her size...cause otherwise she would take over the house!

Just some thoughts..and ramblings...after coming home from my first Tae Kwon Do class in two years!! lol

Kelli,

Well that was just my black sweet wonderful baby. My fat girl...she was 22 lbs at one point...her belly would drag on the ground...she was a junk food junkie...I could give Damien shrimp and he would go to town on it...Tia would snub her nose at me like I was nuts to think she would eat that kind of stuff...but man...pop open a can of Pringles...woo hoo...she was right by my side...sticking her face in the can! lol

Unfortunately I don't have either of those cats anymore...both of them had to be put down for various reasons but lived long and happy lives!!

I need to do SOMETHING, that's for sure. Last week I cleaned up 24 wheelbarrels of garbage that was chewed up and dragged all over our yard. I still have more to go.

They drag everything away from our garbage hole and DH can't figure out not to put stuff in there unless it's going to be burned immediately. He also left the garage door open a few times this winter. We had half our belongings in there since we moved in late fall. The dogs chewed all the cords off everything that had a cord and ripped everything rippable to shreds.

I was so mad I could have punched DH. I still grumble as I'm cleaning up the yard.

Today I found our hose in 24 pieces, I accidentally left it out after watering the garden yesterday. Those dogs are driving me nuts.

I just got the baby chics, they aren't old enough to go outside yet, they're

fuzzy little 3 " fur balls.

Judging by their reaction to my cat, I could see them chasing the chics and

then killing them if they caught one. Even if they just meant to play with

them, they could EASILY kill a chic by accident just playfully.

My mom has two german sheperds (asking for trouble) and she constantly has

to watch them, they kill anything on the yard that moves. She thought she

had them trained to stop killing her chickens but if she doesn't check on

them for a few hours she'll hear the chickens squawking again. They almost

killed one of her pregnant kitties a few days ago since it couldn't run very

fast. I just hope my dogs aren't as bad as hers.

They are trainable...kind of. Until a couple months ago I couldn't put Brock (21 months old) down for a minute before one of the two would jump on him, knock him over, and start wrestling with him. Brock, of course would scream bloody murder scared to death.

I've been trying to train them to stay away from him and they do....as long as I'm within 5 feet from him. If I walk away from him now they'll just lick him to death instead of jumping but I still can't train them to leave him alone. Brock cries any time I set him down outside because he's scared of the pups.

All this talk is bringing back situations. Your right german

shepherds like to kill. I had one that hated cats and would kill

them if it could catch them. It also sought out field mice and

would shake and flip them around til they died. My little poo is so

funny (yorkipoo) I have put a snake in front of her a couple time

and she'll take it, chomp and toss. I've never let her 'purposly'

kill one but she did inflict her teeth on one badly which I'm sure

died. Even if I point out a spider or a bug to her she goes after

it. So I kinda take back what I said earlier to a point. If they

are taught (have no other choice) but to soothe there appetitie, or

supplementing it cuz there hungry they can and will eat wild prey.

I think if they are fed well and never had to resort to seeking out

wild food than they will just practice the kill and leave it at that.
