You can definitely overdose on " herbal stuff " . Just because it's natural, doesn't mean it's harmless. To the contrary, many herbs are very potent and should only be taken under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. ALWAYS follow the directions, whether they be on a label or from an herbalist. Unless you get a very good amount of learning under your belt yourself (and from a qualified source), NEVER assume you know better- you could really harm yourself! Guest guest
Yes, we can overdose on herbs, like everything else. I believe we can take more than 20 yrs. old though, because of the added stress and pollution in our lives today. And it also depends on what the herb is. Guest guest
Dear Mandy and Juju, There is probably some misunderstanding here. Herbal Remedies cannot kill you. Too much of an herb will have side effects such as vomiting or caughing and things like that. Your body has it's own way of getting too much herb out of it. Your Agnus Castus will make you vomit or expel it some other way if it's organic and natural. Herbs do not " hurt " you in any other way. Guest guest
I think I came across a little more cautious than I intended to- even maybe a little paranoid! LOL When I said " harm yourself " - I was referring to the " poisoning " of one's self to the extent of vomiting and being ill for a few days. Of course there are extreme cases, however very few of them. I do advise caution and education when " self-prescribing " (for 'newbies' to herbalism) because I do believe to randomly decide this herb or that herb will help you based on nothing is irresponsible and sometimes dangerous. I think many people see herbs as completely harmless, and that just isn't so. I believe we should always be well informed/educated when it comes to any health issue regarding ourselves or our children, no matter what healing method you are using. Modern research has confirmed this use, the seeds being used to restore balanced functioning to the female reproductive system. The seeds and fruits are anaphrodisiac, aphrodisiac, galactogogue, ophthalmic, sedative, stomachic, women's complaints. Prolonged usage restores corpus luteum function. The berries of this plant have a range of medicinal actions but possibly the most important is its ability to rectify hormonal imbalances caused by an excess of oestrogen and an insufficiency of progesterone. It acts upon the pituitary gland, reducing the production of certain hormones and increasing the production of others, shifting the balance in favour of the gestagens. Thus it has a wide application of uses in malfunctions of the feminine reproductive system and has been used with great effect in restoring absent menstruation, regulating heavy periods, restoring fertility when this is caused by hormonal imbalance, relieving pre-menstrual tension and easing the change of the menopause. Some caution is advised since excessive doses can cause a nervous disorder known as formication, which manifests as a sensation of insects crawling over the skin. The berries are considered to be an aphrodisiac, though other reports say that they are anaphrodisiac. The reason for this apparent disagreement is that the berries have a regulating effect on the body and so are likely to increase sexual activity in those who are not very active in this area whilst reducing it in those who are very active. The fresh berries are pounded to a pulp and used in the form of a tincture for the relief of paralysis, pains in the limbs, weakness etc.
